Lawsuit threat cancels Christmas concert - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL

"A threatened lawsuit had put a halt to what's become a Christmas tradition for members of the Moanalua High School orchestra.

For the past six years, the award-winning group and volunteers from the New Hope Church have raised more than $200,000 for a charity that treats poor people in Africa."

Boy, that was close. Thank you Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of State and Church for saving our Constitutional values.

Evidently the HS Orchestra puts on a Xmas concert with HS students and using the HS auditorium, yet all the proceeds go to a local church.

Indeed. All that money to Africa was certainly a threat.

Not the point, is it. How much you want to bet that African charity, if it exists, is a New Hope Church?

I bet if it was a Muslim Mosque using a HS to raise funds to send to it's "missions" in Syria, you'd have a problem with that.

The solution is simple.
Instead of the Moanalua High School orchestra, use the newly formed Secular Winter Solstice Celebration Orchestra. The school could charitably loan the new orchestra their instruments, and the members could choose to play for this new orchestra instead.

No lawsuit, no separation of church and state issue, and the Africans still get their charity.

Yeah I would. The Syrian government is killing its citizens. Of course, we really don't know who the rebs are, but, we can guess. But, I'm glad you take solace in the actions of The Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of State and Church. Your undisclosed leanings are showing.

So you automatically assume any mosque is involved with terrorists? How christian and charitable of you.

How about this, the HS orchestra puts on a Xmas show using their own instruments, their own auditorium and their own orchestra director, and keep all the proceeds to fund music and band expenses at the high school?

BTW - I don't believe there is any African charity other then a church or evangelical mission owned or partnered with by New Hope. it's just another one of those little white lies christians tell because they think god will forgive them.

Because you know, the end always justifies the means when it comes to religion.

You specifically asked about Syria. BTW: I'm not a Christian. As I've posted before, I'm agnostic. Sorry to spoil your rant. Unlike you and others however, I'm not threatened by Christians. I am threatened by folks who fly airplanes into buildings. And I'm a firm believer that type of activity can be stifled by concentrating on three cities, Damascus, Riyadh, and Tehran.

Freedom of religion is not freedom from religion.

Let the religious people hold their concert.

Religious music is more often than not very beautiful anyway. At least the ones I heard.

You avoided the question. Do you automatically link every mosque with terrorism? Doesn't matter where it is, use Jordan or Iraq or Iran.

It's not THEIR concert. It's a concert put on by the local HS orchestra, with the HS musical director using the HS auditorium. It's a HS concert in which the church takes 100% of the proceeds.

Did this pertinent fact escape you?

I still don't understand what the problem is.

I believe you should bite the bullet and watch the actual news report. This event is only being held at the HS because the roof collapsed on the building where it's normally held. Not to mention, in every HS I've been a part of students provide their own instruments.

No. Again you specified Syria. Now, why are you threatened about the concert? Are you threatened by this?

"Education is thus a most powerful ally of Humanism, and every American public school is a school of Humanism. What can a theistic Sunday school's meeting, for an hour once a week, and teaching only a fraction of the children, do to stem the tide of the five-day program of humanistic teaching?"

sure
let the students perform the concert
just don't assign the money from ticket sales to a religious entity

The church is the only seller and the only place they're selling the tickets. It's specifically for this charity. Again, only being held at the HS because the roof collapsed on the original venue.

Ya, another High School.

Perhaps but wouldn't we all be correct to ridicule him?

Exactly. Or, donate ALL the money to a local charity, which has been suggested. But the church won't do that.

Because they feel they are entitled.

There's no African charity. It all goes into the general account of the church.

The Constitution prohibits the establishment of a national religion and the idea that allowing a concert in a public high school does just that is too silly to really consider. This isn't about legality, etc. This is about simple hatred and is no real different from the idiots protesting building mosques in NYC.

No, it's about a church using public HS students and HS music director to put on a Xmas concert in a public HS auditorium at no charge and to collect all the proceeds and put them into their church account without any public accounting whatsoever.

BTW - What happened to going to other thread?
