I actually think this is a good idea (vote 'on' instead of 'for'). Have the 'whoever' write up the legislation that includes the President's proposal, bring it to the floor and see how many DEMOCRATS will vote for it...do you REALLY believe they will support giving the president, any president, the power to 'unilaterally raise the U.S. borrowing ceiling'?

I believe it to be overly presumptious that the Democrats in Congress will 'fall in line' with the President's proposals but until/unless the legislation is WRITTEN UP and presented we will never know...
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure" - 2006 Senator Obama...leadership failure indeed!

Is that the message you got?

It is spending that is crippling the United States and the debt is higher then will ever be paid back. In fact there is sufficient money going to Washington but most of it is being wasted.

Over $4,000,000,000,000 in debts accumulated during Obama's first four years and does anyone know where it went? Infrastructure? High speed rail? Underground wiring that would have helped saved place like New Jersey during Sandy? No, it just disappeared and nobody is asking where it all went. Instead they want more of the same policies so they vote in more of this.

The American people of the past tended to be far more fiscally sophisticated than what we see now.

The haggardness of poverty is everywhere seen contrasted with the sleekness of wealth, the exhorted labor of some compensating for the idleness of others, wretched hovels by the side of stately colonnades, the rags of indigence blended with the ensigns of opulence; in a word, the most useless profusion in the midst of the most urgent wants.Jean-Baptiste Say

Not anymore. You could have used that ratio prior to government social programs and when there was a national will to pay down debts. Now such will no longer exists because social programs, and there is always a new one on the way, take precedence over debt repayment. There is no plan to even present a budget, much pass a budget or pay down the debt. No system can operate like that indefinitely.

I mean Republicans blame Democrats and Democrats blame Republicans but "We, the people" just bicker back and forth as much as the political parties themselves. There are just political sides now, different self interest groups, and Americans are becoming ever more divided as to who gets what, and who should pay more.etc.

It's like watching children in a playground bicker about whose fault it is without anyone seriously confronting the problem.

I don't disagree with anything you just said there. The question though is, how can we proceed? I don't know the answer to this one given our current situation.

Both sides have to give BIG sacrifices if we are to fix this financial mess. There isn't a silver bullet from one side that can fix everything.

Obama has raised the national debt by 6 trillion in just 4 yrs and is on track to raise it another 4+ Trillion in the next four years. For a total of 10 trillion in just 8 years trumping all the president combined. Now tell me what liberal Obama and clan want to cut in spending. All I see Liberal Obama wanting to do is tax, borrow, spend and give freebees.

And all I've seen are GOP candidates and previsou GOP presidents that believe in corporate welfare and spending. What's your point?

You seem to think that because Obama has raised the most debt (which in 2008 Bush at that time had raised the most debt) and seem to think the GOP will be bettter. Each president has raised the debt more than the previous president. What does that say about the GOP/Dem duopoly?

You want to blame liberals. I see the reality that both the Dems and Reps are to blame. Yet, you continue on the mindeset that the GOP is better even though they have proven time and time again to be just like the Dems.
