State to Eliminate “Bride” & “Groom” on Marriage Certificates [W:303]

re: State to Eliminate “Bride” & “Groom” on Marriage Certificates [W:303]

Shouldn't we though?

There is a clear distinction between introducing Bob Jones from accounting and his lovely wife Linda to someone at an office holiday party and Sally Mead and her lovely Partner B Danielle. Is there not a definite connotation associated with husband and wife that Person A and Person B lacks? More to the point, doesn't the different terminology invoke a clear difference between the two relationships making the use of one very offensive to the other? Perhaps homosexuals should have just accepted "Civil Unions" if marriage between two homosexual people would forever be seen as not real marriage through terminology.

Why wouldn't you introduce Sally and her lovely wife Danielle?

re: State to Eliminate “Bride” & “Groom” on Marriage Certificates [W:303]

The government should not be involved in marriage, period. It makes no sense and serves no purpose.

Let whoever wants to get married get married according to whatever ceremony or religion they feel comfortable with. Get rid of joint filings and simplify the tax code.

This is what I would like to see. Then individuals churches that support gay marriage would be able to let gay people marry if they felt inclined. We need to take the religious part out of the contract between the two people who want to unite.

I don't think it's quite as romantic to say, "will you be legally bound to me?" though.

You just woke up in the lap of a liberal if you think gay is normal.

There is nothing wrong about people like me, period.

re: State to Eliminate “Bride” & “Groom” on Marriage Certificates [W:303]

All the gay and lesbian couples I have seen have one of them that definately seems the more masuline. Just call him or her the husband.

Watch for the legalization of having sex with children next.

Yes, because two consenting adults is the same as marrying someone under age.

This is why some conservatives are NEVER taken seriously when they resort to idiotic slippery slope techniques that have been debunked for ages.

re: State to Eliminate “Bride” & “Groom” on Marriage Certificates [W:303]

silly conservatives. Getting all upset over semantics.

You obviously have never seen lipstick lesbians before then. There are quite a mnay of them out there, but then most homophobes only go off of stereotypes.

I know many gay couples where you could not make that distinction.

Genius level IQ is not normal either, but it is a good thing. Not being "normal" is not a bad thing.

You've obviously haven't seen many LGBT couples.

Only what you're legally called

Yes they are, in regards to the state, but then most conservatives I know believe marriage is a religious term so why would they care what the dirty ole state calls it?

As long as your church calls it whatever you want it to, what's the big deal?

But you see, we dont live in that kind of world. Government IS involved in marriage and has been for decades.

You should read Bruce Bagemihl's Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity. It shows homosexual behavior in over 1500 species.

I don't even know what LGBT means so you may have a point.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered

This here is one of my biggest qualms with religion. You get to pick and choose what you hate and support.
You want to hate gays, pick church A. You want to support gays, pick church B

It's really too simple.

re: State to Eliminate “Bride” & “Groom” on Marriage Certificates [W:303]

Oh boo hoo, your straight marriage certificates will now be gender neutral. They could create three separate forms, but that would cost more money. Which do you value more, a streamlined budget, or more costs but preservation of traditional terminology? Take your pick. And if gender-neutral terms aren't good enough for you, you could also just pay Focus on the Family or one of those other ridiculous organizations to print one out for you, I'm sure they'd take your money.

You are damn straight about that!

One of my best friends is Lebanese (if you know the joke).
She and her partner are nurses, and are the only folks other than my parents who have ever watched our kids (10 and 14).
Kids can't be any safer than with wonderful people (one is an RN, other is a Nurse Practitioner) who are medical professionals.
The kids understand that they are lesbian, and don't care - neither do we.

Screw these stupid labels for people - excellent folks are just.....excellent folks. Good enough for me.

Maybe it takes one to know one?

Definitely not in THIS case. You should really consider it. And i truly mean that.

re: State to Eliminate “Bride” & “Groom” on Marriage Certificates [W:303]

Roman literature abounded with passages like this as the empire crumbled, take heed America.

"Then up comes a lordly dame who, when her husband wants a drink, mixes toad's blood with his mellow Calenian and improving upon Lucusta herself, teaches her artless neighbours to brave the talk of the town and carry forth to burial the blackened corpses of their husbands. If you want to be anybody nowadays, you must dare some crime that merits narrow Gyara or gaol; honesty is praised and left to shiver. It is to their crimes that men owe their pleasure-grounds and palaces, their fine tables and old silver goblets with goats standing out in relief. Who can get sleep for thinking of a money-loving daughter-in-law seduced, of brides that have lost their virtue, or of adulterers not out of their 'teens? Though nature say me nay, indignation will prompt my verse...."

re: State to Eliminate “Bride” & “Groom” on Marriage Certificates [W:303]

You think I oppose it to make gays unhappy? My family values the traditional gender roles. I believe this is one reason our family is so strong in this society where divorce has risen over time. Have the dads ask their daughters whether they dream of being a bride or a "spouse b". It's the expectation of everything to go to one neutral instead of creating a sufficient alternate that infuriates me. It's similar to the atheists I want to kick the crap out of for expecting crosses to not be in public view or the stupid "holiday tree" controversy.
Your daughter can still call herself a bride, you can still call a decorated tree a Christmas tree. No one will stop you.
This is about a line on a government form, not how you label yourself.
