Massive explosion in Indianapolis

They are being very vague. They state they have ruled out a gas leak, a meth lab, and a bomb. I'm still leaning towards a meth lab.

The explosion blew 2 houses away leaving only foundation. No Meth lab has enough explosive material to do that. Do homes in that area have underground propane tanks or natural gas lines? It could have been "fertilizer" bomb too.

Could it be this?

You've obviously never seen Breaking Bad. :naughty:naughty

When gas leaks cause explosions, it seems they figure it out within a couple of hours. A meth lab and bomb are a little over the top.

I'd put my money on a gas leak, but it's strange they didn't confirm that right away if it was.

Horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to those who have suffered such a grievous loss. I wouldn't even begin to guess what could have caused such a tragic incident. So sad for those who have lost so much.

Indianapolis is a huge Muslim hub. Maybe it was "U.S Citizens" trying to build a bomb. That would explain why the cause is such a secret.

Is it Tuesday?

Maybe its one of those summary executive Obama assassinations with the cowardly drone?

i'm guessing obama was killing some americans without trial, and this was just collateral.

This happened 11 miles south of where I live last night. There is still no cause determined in the explosion. 5 homes destroyed, many other homes damaged. What do you think happened?

Officials: 2 killed, 80 homes affected after massive explosion in Indianapolis

gas explosion. happened in my town in the early 2000s. not nearly as serious that time; only leveled one house, and no one was home. a mailman got picked up and blown about half a block away by it; he ended up being ok.

this one looks really awful, though. prayers and good thoughts for the folks on the south side.

Propane isn't used in suburb type communities so much, it is usually natural gas which is lighter than air....leaking gas rises in air and will collect in the upper parts of your home.
Propane is most often used in rural areas. is heavier than air, and when leaking it SINKS, collecting in lower parts of a home, like your basement.

I live about 30 miles east of Indy, and I heard about it last night at work. I haven't seen alot of the details, but from what I can figure, it seems like a gas leak.

Gotta be either a natural gas or propane leak Those things are not so easy to detect especially after an explosion as the leak could be elsewhere but moving through sewers/pipes or building up slowly in basements/crawlspaces until the concentration is sufficient and an ignition source is found.

Indianapolis explosion: Mystery blast devastates neighborhood, kills 2

Huge explosion. Looks like some people may have been doing some home repair and it went south in a bad way.

At the moment, they have the crew onsite expecting from the gas line to the meter. There were no leaks detected in the underground gas line, but they think it was due to gas. One of the homes that exploded had a higher gas use than other homes in the area, although the gas company hasn't confirmed it yet.

Riggs: Gas "suspected" cause of explosion

That was one hell of an explosion. 80 homes damaged? It is sounding like they think it was a furnace issue ( Gas Leak) although they are also saying no smell was detected. I suspect since it is colder out and the houses are all sealed up for the winter it could have held everything in till it blew. Just speculation on my part.

Sorry to hear that people were hurt in this.

My guess would be it leaked into the basements and hit the flame on the water heater. I have a natural gas furnace (well technically two of them) in my house and have bouts of paranoia about leaks.

You would have thought that the entire house would have been filled to the rafters to cause an explosion of that magnitude. I have never seen anything like that from Natural Gas but I can tell you I will be a lot more careful screwing around in my basement from now on.

I don't blame you for the Paranoia! Stay Safe!

Thanks. I am more sort of inclined to believe it was compressed propane for that reason unless the basements were airtight. I used to rely on the city telling me that there are safety mechanisms in the lines and in the meters to prevent such a thing from ever happening but then a few houses in my town went BOOM from natural gas leaks. Fortunately nobody died because the city had moved them out a few hours earlier after they were unable to find the leak which ended up being about a half mile away and moving along the pipes in the ground until it found an exit into those particular basements. One of the houses didn't even have gas lines to it.

Wow. That's crazy stuff. I have some family friends that live over there and said it is a mess. If it is compressed propane wouldn't there need to be a huge amount to make that sort of destruction?

I would think so but a friend who worked at a propane filling station in NY said it doesn't take that much propane to do huge damage which is why they had to drain the empty/near empty canisters in a bunker far away from any tanks. You might recall that gas station in WV that was disintegrated a few years ago like that by a leak in their propane system. IIRC, the sign was the only thing left to the place.

Amazing. I do remember that station. Didn't know what caused it though. I won't be keeping the BBQ tanks near the house anymore.
