George Lucas Will Donate Disney $4 Billion To Education


The "Star Wars" director will donate the $4.05 billion he will receive from the sale of Lucasfilm Ltd. to Disney to a foundation focused on education, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company,” Lucas said in a statement on Wednesday. “As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”

“I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future –- and the first step begins with the social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt – as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.”

Wow, great to see. Such a commitment to education, needs to be a top priority in this country if we are to stay a world leader. We have fallen in the ranks in education and anything to help is a step in the right direction! I'd think that no matter where you are positioned in the political spectrum that this would be viewed as positive. Seems to be completely selfless too. I will admit however, that the title of the article is a bit misleading as I can't find an actual dollar amount to put to the donation only the majority of the money earned from the transaction.

Thoughts?

After ruining the childhood of countless kids (and adults who were fans of the original SW) the least he could do is ensure that the next generations will have a somewhat better future.

Good for him. But before we start the parade, remember, this virtually protects the rest of his fortune from taxation and he has the added benefit of saying exactly where the money goes. The treasury loses.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it. But there is a huge chunk of tax dollars going missing here.

I can't believe you went there. Really... that was just kinda sorry.

Not to mention you can only deduct so much of charitable contributions and I am pretty sure "billions" is well beyond the limits.

Yes, I have some thoughts.

He's only doing it for the tax deduction.
He doesn't pay enough taxes.
He's using loopholes to fleece Middle Class America.

That's all for now. Give me a little time and I'll have him cheating on his income tax, a plan to name himself Chairman of his new foundation and soak a tax-free salary out of it in the tens of millions and many more reasons why what you call charity, I call tax evasion.

Ummm, Disney is paying Lucas the sum of money...not the other way around. This post is about Lucas making a sizable donation, not Disney.

So, would you like to see him NOT make the donation? Do you have a problem with the charity or just the structure of the IRS in regards to charity?

Maggie, don't be a hack, only rich conservatives donate to evade taxes, Lucas is doing it because he's a kind hearted liberal.

For what it's worth, charitable donation is one of the too many tax loopholes out there that I support. It can however, like anything else out there, be exploited.
