George Lucas Will Donate Disney $4 Billion To Education

I haven't seen that

YourStar! You haven't read the myriad threads where posters criticize Romney for his contributions to the Mormon Church? Where they've said that his contributions weren't all that much considering his net worth? Where the Mormon Church wasn't "worthy" of being a charitable organization? Where they hardly spent any money on helping anybody? Where he did it just to avoid paying taxes?

Are you and I on the same Debate Politics? ;)

No I haven't seen that, though frankly for the past few months I've kept to the Sex, and Sports forums

Though I do agree that giving to an organization that uses their money to ban SSM in California shouldn't be considered a charitable donation.

Id have to agree with YS here, sorry Mags, i have seen a couple things about net worth and tax stuff but nothing big or in any mass numbers as you suggest.

Now that doesnt mean it didnt happen, it might have just been posted by the hacks i dont read or pay attention to often. :D

another area id have to agree with YS is if the church or org that received said money was one of the ones spending millions and millions to fight against equal rights then yeah calling them (that particular church/org) a charity takes away from the word.

Yeah, I've been spending much-too-much time on DP of late. Can't wait to get my sanity back. Ha!

According to your thinking, I guess the Catholic Church doesn't fit that mold either?

it depends, i dont group them all together any more than I do Muslims or individuals because that would be stupid.

just because a catholic church in say Minnesota is a bunch of idiots doesn't mean the one down the street is or mine is. Thats why i made sure to say twice "that particular church/org"

thats also why i bolded and underlined the word if ;)

But yes IMO all the churches that donated MILLIONS, if not a billion dollars to fight against EQUAL RIGHTS is gross in my opinion. Now of course its their money they can do with it what they want that doesnt break the law but id like any monies I donate to ANY org to go to actually helping people in need, children, education, homeless, food banks etc not against fighting against equal rights but hey thats just my opinion.

again in my OPINION thats not charitable nor does it help the country. Just like some religious foster care orgs / adoption orgs that chose to close down because of equality and anti-discrimination laws.

that doesnt punish anybody but the kids. Its gross.

And this was my whole point.

Now I feel bad for thinking Lucas is a douchebag. Hes done more than I could ever hope to accomplish counting this 1 act alone.

And as typical of wealthy liberals, he will now expect everyone else to give the same as he has.

If he as really altruistic, he would have been doing this before.

Lucas has made many generous donations and committments in the past.

But Lucas is no stranger to charitable giving, as he currently serves as chairman of the George Lucas Educational Foundation and in 2006 gave $175 million to his alma mater, USC. He also supports charities such as Make-A-Wish, Stand Up To Cancer, Film Foundation, among others.

In September, even before the new Disney deal, Forbes estimated the divorced, 68-year-old filmmaker's net worth at $3.3 billion, making him the 36th richest celebrity in the world.

In 2010, Lucas signed The Giving Pledge, the effort by Gates and Warren Buffett to get America's wealthiest individuals and families "to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to the philanthropic causes and charitable organizations of their choice either during their lifetime or after their death.""I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education," explained Lucas in a public letter at the time of the pledge. "It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future -- and the first step begins with the social, emotional and intellectual tools we provide to our children."

Tell me about it...What a jerk!
Can't people see the good in ANYTHING?

Goshin kinda hit upon it. People who donate sums like that are not doing it for the tax breaks. Schedule As can only write off a certain percentage of your AGI (adjusted gross income), and 4 billion is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay above it.

Good for him, and if his kids are okay with it, I am. I know that if my dad ever donated 4 billion to charity, I would probably take a swing at him.
