Last night, the Obama campaign blasted out another email claiming that Mitt Romney's tax plan would either require raising taxes on the middle class or blowing a hole in the deficit. "Even the studies that Romney has cited to claim his plan adds up still show he would need to raise middle-class taxes," said the Obama campaign press release. "In fact, Harvard economist Martin Feldstein and Princeton economist Harvey Rosen both concede that paying for Romney’s tax cuts would require large tax increases on families making between $100,000 and $200,000."

But that's not true. Princeton professor Harvey Rosen tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD in an email that the Obama campaign is misrepresenting his paper on Romney's tax plan:

I can’t tell exactly how the Obama campaign reached that characterization of my work. It might be that they assume that Governor Romney wants to keep the taxes from the Affordable Care Act in place, despite the fact that the Governor has called for its complete repeal. The main conclusion of my study is that under plausible assumptions, a proposal along the lines suggested by Governor Romney can both be revenue neutral and keep the net tax burden on taxpayers with incomes above $200,000 about the same. That is, an increase in the tax burden on lower and middle income individuals is not required in order to make the overall plan revenue neutral.

You can check the math that shows Romney's plan is mathematically possible here.

Whoops!!! Another liberal talking point bites the dust.

So...I wonder...is the Obama team dumb?...or are they liars?

In either case, they've learned to not mess with a Princeton Professor's work.

Taxing the rich 80% is possible too.

it would eliminate the deficte and pay all USA debt in 5-10 years......

That is a REAL plan for USA.

We have had enough of gov used to soak the poor and print money for the Rich via the MIC.

Well, that's a fine opinion you have there...but it has nothing to do with team Obama getting slapped down by a professor.

Actually, taxing the Rich at even 100% would not elimate the deficit.

Taxing the "Mega-Rich" (Annual Income over $10 Million) at an Effective Rate of 100%
(dollar amounts in $Thousands)
Current Taxes Paid - $53,790,072; Taxes Paid at New 100% rate - $240,133,885; Revenue Gained - $186,343,813; Reduction of Deficit-12%; Reduction of Debt - 2%

So taking half of the yearly income from every person making between one and ten million dollars would only decrease the nation's debt by 1%. Even taking every last penny from every individual making more than $10 million per year would only reduce the nation's deficit by 12 percent and the debt by 2 percent. There's simply not enough wealth in the community of the rich to erase this country's problems by waving some magic tax wand.

It's scary to me that there are people who think confiscating 80% to 90% of any person's income is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

The Weekly Standard made its debut on September 18, 1995. Edited by William Kristol and Fred Barnes, the magazine is published 48 times a year by Clarity Media Group. The Weekly Standard is available by subscription. The price of a single copy is $4.95.

Who's William Kristol? Who's Fred Barnes?

And there's no copy of the email. Sounds like a pundit lie. Smells like it. Is reacted by others like it.

Where's the email?

You have to include the puppets of the rich in the $200k to $10 mil area.

Over $200k makes $3.125 T per year. Taxed 80% fixes USA.

Its perfectly reasonable for them to take 80% of the revenue from my work.........

Re: Princeton Economist: Obama Campaign Is Misrepresenting My Study on Romney's Tax P

Define rich.

The usual definition of "rich" is the guy who makes $1 more than I do...

Re: Princeton Economist: Obama Campaign Is Misrepresenting My Study on Romney's Tax P

Define rich.

Over $200k, because that is what the IRS figures use as a number.

Re: Princeton Economist: Obama Campaign Is Misrepresenting My Study on Romney's Tax P

Over $200k, because that is what the IRS figures use as a number.

So you want to take 80% of the earnings of anyone earning $200k and over?

Re: Princeton Economist: Obama Campaign Is Misrepresenting My Study on Romney's Tax P

Over $200k, because that is what the IRS figures use as a number.

So a person makes $200,000 in income you want them to pay $160,000 in tax? Why would they make that when they can just make $40,000 and get money from the goverment to boot?

I didn't see this before my last post. There's nothing reasonable about it, because you know why? It's not the government's money. If the govt is not going to let me keep any more than 40 grand a year anyway, what's the incentive to ever go to college or get into a higher earning profession? You're views are truly scary.

Do you think the lean of the publication takes away from the statement from the professor...whom Obama is inaccurately quoting? I mean...dude...a Princeton economist is telling you that Obama is misrepresenting his own study. It doesn't matter if it was reported by the Weekly Standard or ABC.

What email are you talking about? The one the Professor sent to Weekly Standard? It's quoted in the article. Or, do you believe Weekly Standard put that guy's name to what they say is his email? And it's not his?

Come on, dude...you can do better than this, eh?

Re: Princeton Economist: Obama Campaign Is Misrepresenting My Study on Romney's Tax P

the idea that one professor gives his opinion is going to destroy this valid line of attack is simply absurd.

It'll work...if it actually yields more tax revenue.

Taxing an income group at 80% will probably result in one of two things: 1) they will do a better job of hiding their money and/or 2) It will demotivate people to make that much money.

A better plan would be to get the hell out of the way of the private sector, let them make more money that will be taxed at the current rate. That's a 100% fool-proof way to create more tax revenue.

So, those economists that say Obama's stimulus plan was a goo idea are full of poo-poo?

My boss would be paying me a helluva lot of per diem, so my reportable income would be below the 200 grand mark.

Or, pay me about 50 grand a year in Wal-Mart gift cards.

Ummmm, no, it wouldn't work. If you taxed the wealthy at a rate of 100%, it wouldn't touch the fiscal responsibilities that we currently have.

Re: Princeton Economist: Obama Campaign Is Misrepresenting My Study on Romney's Tax P

The point is Obama has quoted this Professor as saying something he didn't.

In my book, that makes Obama a liar...and a dumb one. If he wants to dispute Romney, he should find and quote someone who is actually disputing Romney. Not someone who validates what Romney is saying.

If this economist fell in the forest and nobody was there to see or hear it did it actually happen?

No, it wouldn't work.

Some of you folks seem to be missing the fact that the wealthy tend to derive their income from sources which are substantially more flexible than those of wage earners. If a "rich guy" gets a W-2 it's usually for a relatively small portion of his income. The rest of the stuff can be moved around they are far more able to decide for themselves how much income they choose to show.
