Princeton Economist: Obama Campaign Is Misrepresenting My Study on Romney's Tax Plan

Last night, the Obama campaign blasted out another email claiming that Mitt Romney's tax plan would either require raising taxes on the middle class or blowing a hole in the deficit. "Even the studies that Romney has cited to claim his plan adds up still show he would need to raise middle-class taxes," said the Obama campaign press release. "In fact, Harvard economist Martin Feldstein and Princeton economist Harvey Rosen both concede that paying for Romney’s tax cuts would require large tax increases on families making between $100,000 and $200,000."

But that's not true. Princeton professor Harvey Rosen tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD in an email that the Obama campaign is misrepresenting his paper on Romney's tax plan:

I can’t tell exactly how the Obama campaign reached that characterization of my work. It might be that they assume that Governor Romney wants to keep the taxes from the Affordable Care Act in place, despite the fact that the Governor has called for its complete repeal. The main conclusion of my study is that under plausible assumptions, a proposal along the lines suggested by Governor Romney can both be revenue neutral and keep the net tax burden on taxpayers with incomes above $200,000 about the same. That is, an increase in the tax burden on lower and middle income individuals is not required in order to make the overall plan revenue neutral.

You can check the math that shows Romney's plan is mathematically possible here.

Whoops!!! Another liberal talking point bites the dust.

So...I wonder...is the Obama team dumb?...or are they liars?

In either case, they've learned to not mess with a Princeton Professor's work.

Taxing the rich 80% is possible too.

it would eliminate the deficte and pay all USA debt in 5-10 years......

That is a REAL plan for USA.

We have had enough of gov used to soak the poor and print money for the Rich via the MIC.

Well, that's a fine opinion you have there...but it has nothing to do with team Obama getting slapped down by a professor.

Actually, taxing the Rich at even 100% would not elimate the deficit.

Taxing the "Mega-Rich" (Annual Income over $10 Million) at an Effective Rate of 100%
    (dollar amounts in $Thousands)
Current Taxes Paid - $53,790,072; Taxes Paid at New 100% rate - $240,133,885; Revenue Gained - $186,343,813; Reduction of Deficit-12%; Reduction of Debt - 2%

So taking half of the yearly income from every person making between one and ten million dollars would only decrease the nation's debt by 1%. Even taking every last penny from every individual making more than $10 million per year would only reduce the nation's deficit by 12 percent and the debt by 2 percent. There's simply not enough wealth in the community of the rich to erase this country's problems by waving some magic tax wand.

It's scary to me that there are people who think confiscating 80% to 90% of any person's income is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Who's William Kristol? Who's Fred Barnes?

And there's no copy of the email. Sounds like a pundit lie. Smells like it. Is reacted by others like it.

    Where's the email?

It's more scary that people consider hundreds of billions of dollars nothing.

You have to include the puppets of the rich in the $200k to $10 mil area.

Over $200k makes $3.125 T per year. Taxed 80% fixes USA.

Its perfectly reasonable for them to take 80% of the revenue from my work.........
