And the kids?

Get real. I will suspend judgement until the whole story is told but on the surface, her story is not believable. I'm not sure what you mean by faux posturing. I suppose you're trying to sound educated rather than gullible.
wasn't the neighbor's representation to the police that the mother had run over the children with her car
which we (and the police) have found out was not true

They should be on their own property. That's where we played when I was a kid. Front yard. Back yard. On the PUBLIC playground up at the school. That was it. Now if we were invited to a friend's house and allowed to go, then we played in their front or back yard. We didn't wander through other people's property.

I suppose you're right. I do recall being yelled at to get out of people's yards.

Remembering my childhood isn't as clear as it used to be. We did however, play in the street quite a bit as adolescents. We would just move when we saw a car coming.

The ones most likely to yell at me to get out of someone's yard were my own parents.

We never really did. Our street was way too dangerous for that. Too many cars flying down the street, with no interest in stopping for anyone or anything. We had one young lady killed by a car not 150 yards from my house, and she was IN the crosswalk and crossing with the walk light.

Poor Tigger. We played in the field behind our house and I had no idea who it belonged to. We played out in the street, under the streetlights, in the summer. When we played tag or hide-and-seek we went everywhere. We went down to the river and played on what had to have been other people's property. But, where I grew up the school was definitely not public property and that included the playground. That was school property and they were touchy. Poor Tigger. I wonder if his parents allowed him to play in his yard but on the government utility easement?

The only time I recall getting yelled at was when I said a "bad" word and the neighbor woman told me if she heard that again she'd be telling my aunt. I said, quite meekly, "Yes, Ms. McConnell." Of course, back in the late forties and early fifties there were precious few houses without kids.

It's not my job to babysit someone else's kids.... Correct. It IS however, my job to ensure that I know who and what is going on in my own yard on my own property; and to reduce my liability.

This mother was sitting in the yard while her kids rode their bikes.. Do you get it?
I don't have kids. 35 years ago I would have been 3 years old. Your kids definitely existed in a different world than my brothers and I did.

Regardless of where she was, if the kids are in the street or in other people's yards she's not doing her job.

Personally, I prefered to be inside reading or doing other things than being out and about. When I was outside it was almost always in our yard, the school property up the street, or at a friend's house. Either of the latter two were with prior permission of a parent, and discussion of when I had to be home.
