Todd Akin's bad week keeps getting worse.

The six-term Missouri GOP congressman, a candidate for U.S. Senate, apparently bailed on a planned interview with CNN's Piers Morgan, leaving the host to berate him as a "gutless little twerp" Monday evening.
Akin's troubles began Sunday when he suggested during a television interview that women who are victims of "legitimate rape" are biologically unlikely to become pregnant -- attributing the dubious science to "doctors." Numerous Republicans have called on the congressman to withdraw from his challenge against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Akin has apologized for his remarks, and insisted he'll stay in the race. However, the media firestorm shows little sign of abating after two days.

He should step back. I think he mis-spoke, but this isn't going away. The party'd better find some incentive for him to do so by tomorrow.

No he should not step back. He should remain on the ballot and suffer the defeat and not take away the citizens democratic rights. Having only 1 candidate is an insult to democracy.

I don't think he mis-spoke. I think Adkin really believes what he said as do a lot of other ultra far right conservatives. Redefining rape, death penalty for having an abortion, personhood for a fetus, it all ties in and Paul Ryan is right in the thick of it because that is exactly what he believes too.

While I do think that Akin is indeed a gutless little turd...

It is rather ironic for Piers Morgan to be calling anyone else out for anything as he's one of the most hated TV personalities in the UK and is a complete asshole.

Are you freakin' kidding me? So many in the past should have been voted out, yet pull of a victory despite having been found corrupt (amongst other things). I think it would be sweet to vote this deranged dumbass out of office, but his words are merely nothing compared to other deeds done at the hands of the historical re-elected. It's a sad and pathetic reflection at the either the apathy, partisanship and/or intelligence of the voter.

While he definitely made a stupid statement, why not allow his position, on this issue, to evolve? His position on abortion, an already settled "right" in this nation, pales compared to the other issues at hand before congress. To allow the reigning Demorat virtually automatic re-election for another 6 years is insane. Taking himself out of the race at this point (only a few weeks until the election) denies the voters of MO any hope of ousting (replacing?) one of their major current DC morons.

Morgan's comment confirms that Akin was right to not appear. Morgan always struck me as a "twerp" himself.
