I read another article that says they're probably for another agency. Some strange things are happening with the recent DOD documentary showing the military how to quell an insurrection with force. The gov purchasing large quantities of meat to freeze and now hollow point (?) bullets, which are for killing. I wonder what they're preparing for or expecting>?

I'll be concerned if we can show that previous requests didn't include ammo, or included a significantly smaller request for ammo.

I still think 46,000 rounds of hollow points for game wardens is a little whacked. "Drop that illegal Fish Ma'am or I'll blow you away with my 1000's of semiautomatic hollowpoint rounds!" Now if it were the Coast Guard, maybe. But I'm not sure JHP's (hollowpoints) are legal for the military?

I dunno anything about SOP. What is the duration for which those 46k rounds were ordered? Are they used (albeit foolishly) for target practice? Are they designated for taking down wildlife that poses a threat to campers/fishers/hikers/others in state/federal parks?

I mean, I definitely think we should get an explanation, 'cause it's all supposition.

Most of NMFS is actually boarding and regulating the commercial fishing sector (many of them are joint boardings with the Coast Guard). They're not your average game warden checking for fishing licenses and some recational fisherman that might be poaching.

Don't know how much interaction you've had with the commercial fishing industry but the vast majority of the guys that crew these boats aren't the most savory characters. And they are operating in a maritime environment. Sea air + bullets = very short shelf life.

They wouldn't use an expensive JHP round for target practice or pistol rounds for game. And if the rounds aren't stored improperly they should have a long shelf life.

I won't claim to know much about the maritime environment though I don't see many stories of "shootouts" in the news on the high seas.

You likely won't. They don't occur very often but NMFS does vessel boarding just like the Coast Guard does. The Coast Guard is armed doing the same missions, why wouldn't NFMS be?

The commercial fishing industry consists largely of substance abusers (not talking about pot smokers either, towns with a heavy commercial fishing presence usually have a higher than average heroin problem).

On top of that, the commercial fishing industry downright despise NMFS.

A bit of google searching turned up the fact that Jeff Radonski (one of the people the ammo is being shipped to) is the assistant special agent in charge of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. So essentially, there are some law enforcement agents working for NOAA, and they need ammo for their service weapons.

Yeah, the guys that work the FL Keys NMS are law enforcement. Total douchebags, but still law enforcement.

Re: National Weather Service to purchase large amount of handgun ammunition...?

Most who has ever worked with a Government agency know that at the end of the fiscal year (Aug 31)
in the case of the Fed. There are unspent monies that must be dealt with.
    Different ledgers have different uses.
So it may be something as simple as TSA has some capital money left.
and NOAA has some expense money left.
TSA needs ammo (expense) NOAA needs a new capital something. each buys the other thing.
Is it right? no way, does it happen? I think it does all the time.
