Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Funera

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

No, it's a abuse. Suffering people don't need that. Far beyond annoying. Again, they can protest all they want, say what they want, just leave the families alone.

It's not abuse in the least. They aren't creating any physical altercation on church property, they are not chasing these people into the church or across the cemetery. They're standing off to the side running their mouths about stupid stuff no one in their right mind would go on about. That's it.

Do that at a funeral I'm attending and I'll give you a blood eagle.

You really shouldn't threaten committing an act of murder on a public forum in light of the recent happenings in this country.

I think I could do that at a funeral you're attending and I'll just watch you walk away.

Though it is interesting to see your reaction to freedom.....murder.

Abuse is not just physical. Have you ever lost a loved one, one that makes it hard to breath to just htink of their loss? If you have, you will know this is abuse. Sickening abuse. No one should have to endure it.

No one should have to endure a lot of ****, but it's a free country and WBC was not infringing upon any one's rights in the least.

Way off topic. But ok.

Not that free. As noted, there is no absolute right. We make reasonable restrictions all the time. And not abusing me while I bury a loved one is perhaps the most reasonable restriction I've seen in a long time. A friend of mine recently lost his only son. I can't imagine how much he'd have suffered if he had to endure that abuse. I don't know that I could have sat and listened to it without acting. I'm sorry, but it is too much to ask of people to tolerate.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

'Ya know, I'm a little torn on this, but I like the rule. My first knee jerk reaction is that even douche bags have first amendment rights. But, when I think a little more, I think of what limits there might be on the first amendment. Certainly, a member of Westboro does not have the right to invade my home and protest. After all, that is my privacy (not to mention my property). So how far can the first amendment argument be pushed before it begins to violate the rights of others? After careful thought, I have have to agree with Obama on this one. If Westboro wants to protest military funerals, let them do it from their church. They don't have the right to invade the privacy of others, and hurt them while they are grieving over a family member. It is tacky, and now it is illegal.

Now that running over the rights of the families of deceased soldiers is illegal, the Patriot Guard is probably no longer needed. At this time, I would like to thank the Patriot Guard from the bottom of my heart, for what they did to confront and defeat the agenda of these assholes who are going to fry in hell for using the word of God to spread such hatred.

Agreed. They still have Freedom of Speech, but now others have Freedom to not Listen (if that makes any sense)

They can still spew hatred, but those who don't want to see or hear it don't have to.

Not that free. As noted, there is no absolute right.

This is true, the one and only natural limit to rights is that you may not infringe upon the rights of others. And WBC did not. You don't need to tolerate it. You can hate it, and counter protest, and bitch all you want; you just cannot justly stop it.

It makes no sense. You have no right over vibrations of the air. You can, however, choose to ignore it.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

Your opinion may change if you were grieving the loss of a loved one while people were screaming your loved one deserved to die.
I think most people understand your point, they just don't agree with it.

One persons rights doesn't negate another's rights.

While this is true. WBC violated no one's rights.

Whos rights are being violated here?

What about one's right to privacy? As much as I agree with a previous post that this may be just a preview of more and more rights being slowly taken away, there must be a threshold of where one person's rights stop and another's starts.

Whose privacy is being violated? If they are on public property protesting no-ones privacy is being violated.

The right to bury my loved one and grieve in peace. No right is absolute. There are rules even for public space.

People protesting a funreal have every right to. As ****ed up as it sounds they have the right to use public space to protest whatever ****ed up **** they believe in. Just as neo-nazis have the right to march through a town that has a good amount of jews in it like in Skokie, Illinois.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

The rights of those paying respects to the dead. At what point to we say enough? If you go to a public square to hear a speaker, and find the topic offensive, you can leave. But in a setting where you have certain expectations of privacy (which you paid for) and that public speaker invades your space?
Where does it stop? Do they have a right to come to your home and do the same, as long as they stay on public property? Where do the rights of those to express themselves stop and the rights of those who don't want to hear/see it start?

They have every right to protest in a public space. As long as the space is public. I know sometimes it sucks with hate speech but guess what they have the right to spew their ****ing ignorance all they want.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

Agreed. As much as the Skokie example is true, however people can evade the protest.
Expectations of privacy at a Funeral Home, private home, Cemetery are different from expectations on a city street

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

And at 300 feet away, they can protest till their lungs hurt.:)

They're outside on public land. How much privacy do you get outside? They're not on the church's property, they're not inside.

That right doesn't necessarily exist, particularly if you are going to utilize public roads and spaces in the process.
