Ok, now this is one issue that "EVERYONE" should say Thank You Mr President....

President Barack Obama signed the Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012 into law on Monday, providing a wide-ranging package of benefits to military personnel and enacting new restrictions on protests of service member funerals.

"We have a moral sacred duty to our men and women in uniform," Obama said before signing the bill, according to a pool report. "The graves of our veterans are hallowed grounds."

Im not going to say thank you to someone that is limiting freedom of speech.
Now i dislike these guys as much as the next guy but its clearly limiting freedom of speech and i disagree with this.
We must protect freedom of speech for everyone, even the biggest idiots among us.

We disagree :) Freedom of speech like everything else is not limitless

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

The bill that this was attached to is supposed to help the families of soldiers who have illnesses as a result of the bad water they had been consuming while living at Camp Lejeune, IIRC.

Guess no one will be asking why service members and their families had been unaware of the poisoned waters they had been ingesting here at home.

Better to make it about protesting funerals, so that no one would notice the real tragedy going on behind the scenes.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Uhhh where is the limit in this?
This is clearly prohibiting the free exercise of speech and assembly.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

I don't support WBC, but I don't support that segment of the bill, either. WBC isn't doing anything illegal or dangerous. They're being assholes. There's no constitutional limitation on being an asshole.

I believe this is unconstitutional. This is basically spitting on the graves of the soldiers who died fighting for this country. This is also a dangerous slippery slop that should be avoided at all costs. If the president really wants to stop these assholes then limit the attorney fees and awards someone may collect. If you limit these fees then it will be unprofitable for these assholes to run their provoke and sue scam.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

I'm an army brat and generally supportive of positive legislation favoring the military.

I'm a bit skeptical of "feel good" legislation that appears at re-election time.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

Obama signed it? Oh why should I be surprised at this.

So military gets special treatment, again. ALL funerals should be off limits to asshollery, not just military ones.

NO, WBC has been doing the spitting. I don't see any freedom lost. These people can still vomit their vile puke. Just not at the funerals.

From the OP:

Under the new legislation, protests must be held at least 300 feet from military funerals and are prohibited two hours before or after a service. The law counters a 2011 Supreme Court ruling, which found that displays such as Westboro's were protected under the First Amendment.

They still get to speak and be heard. They are just now less likley to get shot.

Your freedom of speech does not give you the right to verbally harass people at their religious events.

When was the last time Westboro actually went to the actual burial/service and interrupted the actual burial/service?

I think i posted one last week...where they went to a service but was swarmed by thousands who blocked them from getting near or disrupting the service....You do realize that one day they are going to cause some nutjob to go off and start mowing them down....Im shocked it hasnt happened already.....they attempted to block a service quite recently and were foiled

What does it matter? Your right to freedom of speech, doesn't give you the right to harass others at their events. We have a million kind of laws where things like freedom of speech do not trump things like property rights.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

'Ya know, I'm a little torn on this, but I like the rule. My first knee jerk reaction is that even douche bags have first amendment rights. But, when I think a little more, I think of what limits there might be on the first amendment. Certainly, a member of Westboro does not have the right to invade my home and protest. After all, that is my privacy (not to mention my property). So how far can the first amendment argument be pushed before it begins to violate the rights of others? After careful thought, I have have to agree with Obama on this one. If Westboro wants to protest military funerals, let them do it from their church. They don't have the right to invade the privacy of others, and hurt them while they are grieving over a family member. It is tacky, and now it is illegal.

Now that running over the rights of the families of deceased soldiers is illegal, the Patriot Guard is probably no longer needed. At this time, I would like to thank the Patriot Guard from the bottom of my heart, for what they did to confront and defeat the agenda of these assholes who are going to fry in hell for using the word of God to spread such hatred.

I really, really dislike the WBC.

They are one of the most disgusting and hateful groups out there.

BUT laws enacted like this at the state level have been struck down every time as far as I'm aware and it will not likely pass constitutional muster as you are curbing freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.

It is unfortunate that we have assholes like this to deal with in our society but there they are and it is a testament to the freedoms we enjoy in our nations that this hateful, vitriolic douchebaggery is so freely propogated.

To the members of the Westboro Baptist Church:

I just feel sorry for you.

A life spent in hatred is no life lived at all.

And it may get struck down again, we'll see. I believe they they have the right to protest and be the assholes they are, but doing so as they have been is interefering with others wo have the right to bury their dead in peace. If you can't scream fire in a crowded building, you shouldn't be able to harass gieveing families. If this law said they coouldn't speak or protest, as much aas it would hurt me, I'd defend them. That isn't what it says.

Westboro has served a good purpose...and that is that it universely brought most ALL people together to focus contempt on them. This isnt a left or right thing...its not a black and white thing...its not a gay or straight thing...its a these are just a group of hateful scumbags thing.
Their having free speech in itself is not the problem...the problem is they deeply hurt people that have suffered a loss for no reason. To me thats not freedom of speech. I do not advocate violence towards them....but im just amazed there hasnt been any deadly force used on them..

Umm...thanks for limiting free speech? For expanding government against our free rights? I understand the emotion here, but this is not acceptable government force. This is just another expansion of government. We do not have "moral and sacred duty to our men and women in uniform" we have a moral and sacred duty to our liberty and freedom!

And that's how freedom dies, not with resistance, not with cursing, but with applause.

"Fighting words" are not covered under the first amendment.

Also, 300 feet is hardly a 'ban'.

You're overreacting.

You should say "Thank you."

What if one is trying to protest at a funeral not to exalt the death of the soldier, but rather to protest the actions of government which led to the death? Is that not legitimate protest? Not under this law it's not, off you go and enjoy jail.

I cannot believe there are people who support bills like this, I have to wonder if they've thought any of this through.
