Nine Great American Companies That Will Never Recover:

I don't get it... Groupon, AMD, Bank of America, and DELL are great American companies? Crappy computers, bad graphics, scams and outrageous interest rates are what we consider "great"? We're Americans damn it. We can do better.

Maybe the term "great big" american companies would be better.

Bank of America is massive. Dell sold more computers (for better or worse) during their heyday. B&N managed to wipe out 99% of independent book sellers before Amazon wiped out B&N. Sprint was huge back in the day. The NYT used to exert huge influence around the world. Zynga I never heard of and Groupon, well, silly. JC Penny? I bought some underwear there last year and I am a grat person so maybe it rubbed off on them (ha-ha).

They're all a bunch of wannabe monopolists who couldn't compete when better/more efficient/cheaper services became readily available.

I still don't know why people complain about Sprint. We have them, have had them for years (my husband had his Sprint account when we met). And we have had no problems. Plus, I think they have the only unlimited data plan left. And I love my Evo.

Do you agree with this list...? Scroll down theres a slide of the nine companies that wont recover....JC Penny, Bank America to name 2

Nine Great American Companies That Will Never Recover: 24/7 Wall St.

Disagree on some.

Bank of America wont fail, because... it is too big to fail. The FDIC simply does not have the 1 trillion dollars needed if BOA fails. It is also still the second biggest bank in the US after JP Morgan which aint really a bank.

JC Penny... I started to hear about the fall of JC Penny over here in Europe in the 1970s.. they are still around.

New York Times.. will be around long time in some format or another. The brand name is simply too big. Sure the newspaper business is going down because of the internet but we still need news. I know right wingers hate the NYT, but it is like the BBC .. a very reputable news organisation and they dont die easily.

Groupon... hardly a great american company. If it was not for watching business channels on TV, I would never have heard of it. They have failed like many other internet based companies because they are too America focused.

Barnes and Noble.... again, too american focused even for their online business. We still cant legally get the Nook in Europe as far as I know, but we can get the Kindle.

Zynga... come on lol, what is next adding Facebook on the list? How about Twitter? Zynga makes games for Facebook and online btw.

Dell.. Disagree fully. Dell is far from "never recover". The PC business changes constantly. Gateway use to be a huge player on the PC market, and where are they now? Dell was big then too, and are still around. And dont believe the hype over the PC is dead and to be replaced by the tablet... the tablet "fab" is all but over as people have realized the limitations of iOS and ARM based tablets. Look at Lenovo.. or better known as IBM... soon to be the biggest PC seller in the world.

AMD wont go down either. Why? because if it does, the Intel will be in Microsoft monopoly area and that is something they want to avoid. That is why Microsoft bailed Apple out back in the day.

By recover maybe it means will never return to its former "BIGNESS" I left bank america and they constantly hawk me via the mail, email and telephone...sent me a big survey yesterday email why I left them and why I wont return.

JC Penny and Sears were to of the Greatest American Retailers decades ago...both had catalogs both stores rocked. Both stores sold items Americans actually NEEDED and used by regions. They treated their employees like gold...there was a time that a major appliance salesman in sears was a SOUGHT after Job...they made a fantastic salary plus pension and benefits...they made 10% of their gross sales per day, week..plus bonus for selling so much, plus bonus for exented warranty etc....then overnight they destryed that..and had very unhappy employees..
JC Penny just kept changing their lines of products to cheaper and cheaper then in alot of instances to GARBAGE...I used to buy alot in Jc Penny...I dont buy very much anymore because alot of its trash....My point is this...some great companies have murdered themselves because of the pursuit of ONE extra buck....that cost them a ton...

The only one I'm really concerned about is Barnes and Noble. We've lost Waldenbooks, Borders, and most of the small retailers. If B&N goes under where the hell am I going to go to get books?

Bookstores are never returning to greatness...murdered by technology

I don't like shopping for books online. I never have and probably never will. I'm definitely not the sort of person who will ever have my more than 600 title library converted onto some e-reader and the physical books done away with. I will probably get an e-reader someday, but it will be used solely for extended duration trips where I'm not interested in packing a half dozen different books.

You will always be able to buy books...just not in single focus'd book stores...Kmart, walmart ...will always sell books...the big book stores with the expresso bars and ridiculous priced pastry are all going to fade...they closed two BIG ones here recently
Theres always the library which I still use..:)

JC Penny has been in steady decline for years. It seems that the only thing keeping Sears afloat is Craftsman tools.
BoA won't fail for the reasons mentioned. Groupon and Zynga should not be on this list. They are the equivalent of Crocs, IMHO.

BN can survive, but they have to open up internationally. I know several military/contractors that went with Kindle because of the hassle downloading content while deployed. E-books are perfect for travelers and BN is missing that entire market.

KMart and Walmart are only worthwhile for the latest and greatest pop culture phenomenon and trashy romances. My tastes in books are far more diverse than that. For the same reason the library is generally not a terribly worthwhile option for me. There's a greater diversity at the library, but there generally isn't the depth in any one subject that I tend to look for.

Honestly, I could do with out the expresso bar, the pastry, the gift section, etc.... In a perfect world I'd love to own and operate a bookstore of my own. It's never going to happen, but it would be a very enjoyable way to pass the time so far as I'm concerned. It would be about the BOOKS. A wide variety of topics with reasonable depth in each. New stuff and used/older books.

curious; what causes you to believe groupon is a good company

My thoughts.

JCPenney: Eh, I wasn't really aware that they were having problems. I do most of my clothes shopping at either Wal Mart or Kohls anyway.

New York Times: Absolutely going to go away. It may take awhile, but newspapers are on the way out across the country. They'll probably be one of the last standing, but they'll either go under, or switch to an online-only model eventually I'm guessing.

Groupon: Also going to be gone soon. If they're going up against the likes of Amazon and Google, they're going to lose, period.

Sprint: Yep, also a goner. It won't be too many years before Verizon and AT&T are the only major nationwide cell phone carriers.

Barnes & Noble: This one I'm not so sure about. I can see the retail stores slowly disappearing, but the online business sticking around.

Zynga: Hard to believe they're going away when pretty much everyone I know is playing their games on facebook.

Dell: Also hard to believe they're going away, but there are some serious new competitors in the PC/laptop market, and tablets and smartphones are hurting that market in general, so it could happen.

AMD: Yeah, I could see it. It's really only bargain basement computers that use AMD processors anymore.

Bank of America: Nah, the government won't let them fail.

Netflix is another web company that's doomed.

Sears did this to themselves.
Our freezer broke, we called sears.
They came out and said "yep your freezer is broke".
He did nothing to fix it.
They said if we call them again, it will be another $80.00 charge.

They should die. Bloody Microsoft loving bastards. I cancelled them less than 4 hrs into a trial subscription and they are now on my google mail spam list. Not only do they not support Linux (not uncommon for those targeting home PCs) but are active in suppressing any support for it (the owner is a share holder and boardmember of Microsft). Anyone know of a good streaming movie service that is not hardwired to micro****?

It's would be sad to see B&N go though. I never got into the whole e-reader thing. Due to medical problems, I just cannot look/watch electronic media for very long. I hate ordering things online instead of walking in, looking at the selections and choosing one. I did have an Amazon account one time, but after they changed their privacy policy about selling personal data, I dumped them and told them to never bother me again.

Dell--who cares, I haven't bought a pre-assembled PC for around 15 years now.

Sears--again, don't care. They were always too pricey anyways for me and now that they no longer have exclusive sales rights to Craftsman tools (have seen them at a ACE Hardware and in military BX/PX/NavEX), they are hosed. Merging with Kmart didn't exactly help them out either.

JC Penny--Don't really dislike them, but never shopped at them personally. For shirts and jeans and other clothes, have to go with Walmart. $12 a pair jeans made in china vs $30-$40 for Levi's, sorry, quality difference is not great enough to pay the extra money. Have I had Walmart jeans start coming appart on me, sure, but I have also had Levi's that have done the same. Sure, I would go with better quality at a higher price, but it has to be enough of a difference to justify that price.

Bank Of America--good riddence. Never did like them and never wanted to do business with them. Unfortunately for me, my original mortgage holder went under during the crash and BOA picked it up. If I wasn't planning to sell the house, I would redo it with USAA.

NYT--die you liberal loving bastards.

As to the others, don't really know about them, never used them so oh well, they fail.
