I don't get it... Groupon, AMD, Bank of America, and DELL are great American companies? Crappy computers, bad graphics, scams and outrageous interest rates are what we consider "great"? We're Americans damn it. We can do better.

Maybe the term "great big" american companies would be better.

Bank of America is massive. Dell sold more computers (for better or worse) during their heyday. B&N managed to wipe out 99% of independent book sellers before Amazon wiped out B&N. Sprint was huge back in the day. The NYT used to exert huge influence around the world. Zynga I never heard of and Groupon, well, silly. JC Penny? I bought some underwear there last year and I am a grat person so maybe it rubbed off on them (ha-ha).

They're all a bunch of wannabe monopolists who couldn't compete when better/more efficient/cheaper services became readily available.

I still don't know why people complain about Sprint. We have them, have had them for years (my husband had his Sprint account when we met). And we have had no problems. Plus, I think they have the only unlimited data plan left. And I love my Evo.

    Disagree on some.

Bank of America wont fail, because... it is too big to fail. The FDIC simply does not have the 1 trillion dollars needed if BOA fails. It is also still the second biggest bank in the US after JP Morgan which aint really a bank.

JC Penny... I started to hear about the fall of JC Penny over here in Europe in the 1970s.. they are still around.

New York Times.. will be around long time in some format or another. The brand name is simply too big. Sure the newspaper business is going down because of the internet but we still need news. I know right wingers hate the NYT, but it is like the BBC .. a very reputable news organisation and they dont die easily.

Groupon... hardly a great american company. If it was not for watching business channels on TV, I would never have heard of it. They have failed like many other internet based companies because they are too America focused.

Barnes and Noble.... again, too american focused even for their online business. We still cant legally get the Nook in Europe as far as I know, but we can get the Kindle.

Zynga... come on lol, what is next adding Facebook on the list? How about Twitter? Zynga makes games for Facebook and online btw.

Dell.. Disagree fully. Dell is far from "never recover". The PC business changes constantly. Gateway use to be a huge player on the PC market, and where are they now? Dell was big then too, and are still around. And dont believe the hype over the PC is dead and to be replaced by the tablet... the tablet "fab" is all but over as people have realized the limitations of iOS and ARM based tablets. Look at Lenovo.. or better known as IBM... soon to be the biggest PC seller in the world.

AMD wont go down either. Why? because if it does, the Intel will be in Microsoft monopoly area and that is something they want to avoid. That is why Microsoft bailed Apple out back in the day.

By recover maybe it means will never return to its former "BIGNESS" I left bank america and they constantly hawk me via the mail, email and telephone...sent me a big survey yesterday email why I left them and why I wont return.

JC Penny and Sears were to of the Greatest American Retailers decades ago...both had catalogs both stores rocked. Both stores sold items Americans actually NEEDED and used by regions. They treated their employees like gold...there was a time that a major appliance salesman in sears was a SOUGHT after Job...they made a fantastic salary plus pension and benefits...they made 10% of their gross sales per day, week..plus bonus for selling so much, plus bonus for exented warranty etc....then overnight they destryed that..and had very unhappy employees..
JC Penny just kept changing their lines of products to cheaper and cheaper then in alot of instances to GARBAGE...I used to buy alot in Jc Penny...I dont buy very much anymore because alot of its trash....My point is this...some great companies have murdered themselves because of the pursuit of ONE extra buck....that cost them a ton...

The only one I'm really concerned about is Barnes and Noble. We've lost Waldenbooks, Borders, and most of the small retailers. If B&N goes under where the hell am I going to go to get books?

I don't like shopping for books online. I never have and probably never will. I'm definitely not the sort of person who will ever have my more than 600 title library converted onto some e-reader and the physical books done away with. I will probably get an e-reader someday, but it will be used solely for extended duration trips where I'm not interested in packing a half dozen different books.
