This is unbelievable, the scenes are chillingly reminiscent of some of the things we saw on September the 11th 2001 albeit on a much smaller scale. Let's hope it doesn't cost as many lives for the sake of the people in that building and i do hope that this is not terrorism related.

Thankfully there are no injuries being reported and hundreds have been safely evacuated.

Officials said no-one was injured in the building which houses shops, apartments and offices.

The officials said hundreds of people were safely evacuated.

Turkey's Anatolia news agencies earlier reported that many people had been stranded inside.

Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu was quoted as saying that a faulty air conditioner may have caused the fire.

If i'm not mistaken, legislation was introduced after 9/11 for the compulsory installation of safety mechanisms in Skyscraper's in the event of fires, explosions or hostile takeover's which has probably contributed to the relative success in getting people out:

Smart building prevented disaster,' building owner says

The "smart" features of the Polat Tower prevented a disaster, according to the building's owner.

Adnan Polat said the building had internal mechanisms that reacted to such disasters, thereby stopping the flames from spreading to the interior of the structure, daily Hürriyet reported on its website.

"Natural gas and elevators automatically stop when a fire alarm goes off," Polat said. The building pumped pressurized air into fire escapes to provide fresh air to people evacuating the building, he added.

Polat said the building had a total of 36,000 control points. "I am glad we had all those control sensors, and the greatest reward was the fact that no one was injured."

Around 1,500 people live in the high-rise, Polat said, adding that the building's security personnel were able to evacuate everyone, "including pets."

A horrifying video with the fire appearing to go up the entire building.

It's been put out now and there have been no recorded injuries.
