Homeland Security suspends immigration agreements with Arizona police

Homeland Security suspends immigration agreements with Arizona police - Washington Times

The Obama administration said Monday it is suspending existing agreements with Arizona police over enforcement of federal immigration laws, and said it has issued a directive telling federal authorities to decline many of the calls reporting illegal immigrants that the Homeland Security Department may get from Arizona police.
Administration officials, speaking on condition they not be named, told reporters they expect to see an increase in the number of calls they get from Arizona police — but that won’t change President Obama’s decision to limit whom the government actually tries to detain and deport.
“We will not be issuing detainers on individuals unless they clearly meet our defined priorities,” one official said in a telephone briefing.
On Monday the administration officials also said they are ending the seven 287(g) task force agreements with Arizona law enforcement officials, which proactively had granted some local police the powers to enforce immigration laws.
The task forces, named for the section of law that allows them, have proved popular among many localities but have been a political headache for the Obama administration, with immigrant-rights groups saying they led to abuses.
On Monday the administration officials said they had concluded the seven agreements they had signed with various departments in Arizona weren’t working and took the Supreme Court’s ruling as a chance to scrap them.
So we have a President that is eliminating the ability of Arizona to enforce the provision the Supreme Court left in place 2(b).
The question will then become how will law enforcement in Arizona react? They are invested in enforcing immigration to the extent they can do so. Ive got to wonder what the reaction will be in the White House if they lose the Health Care Act challenge.

I don't agree with the SC ruling (at least it was a split decision). I will accept it because that is our system.
Now the question to ask is how is Obama going to assist border States with illegal alien problems. Homeland Security says they must prioritize because of limited resources. So what does Obama do, turn his back on those that need help, instead of a partnering with the States to get a better handle on the illegal aliens. Good leadership President Obama.

I voted for Obama over McCain last time. I can tell you there is no way in heck I will vote for him again. He and Janet N. are a total dissapointment. Lets just open the borders and give the US away.

Seems kind of immature to me.

My thoughts also. I good leader would find a way to foster the resources the States have in improving border security and dealing with the illegal alien issue (especially the ones who have just crossed). Instead, this adminstration just kicked the State in the rear. I hope others will see how political that decision was to cut off cooperation with the States.

I feel bad for the Border Patrol/ICE assigned in Arizona. You often develop personal relationships with the local law enforcement. They must be looked at right now by the local cops as a toothless now.

Pretty sad day in this country.

Isn't that illegal? Isn't it the governments job to enforce federal law? How are they going to enforce the law if they ignore phone calls from police?

After the SCOTUS decision, Sheriff Joe made a point of saying that ICE had locally been terrific.

Seems to me that the Obama Admin. is now punishing Arizona. I think this will ultimately backfire.

Didn't you know? States rights don't exist when the Fed has agendas to push.
I love the NSA. It's like having a secret fan-base you will never see, but they're there, watching everything you write and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that I may be some person's only form of unconstitutional entertainment one night.

Obama is no longer concerned with the law, and neither is Holder. The Obama idea is that federal laws may be publically proclaimed as being ignored to gain political favor with "important" voting blocs. Imagine the outrage on the left when the NEXT president decides that federal "help" in the big blue cities can be withheld due to "limited resources", or that federal "education aid" can be withheld from states that "mismanage" their education costs by paying huge union pension benefits. Hmm...
