Uraguay Legalizes Marijuana

Sounds like a fairly good plan. I don’t like the part about them having to register, but I am sure that was a concession to help get it passed. That can always be dropped later when it turns out that legal pot hasn’t destroyed their country.

from the article..

"There are no laws against marijuana use in Uruguay. Possession of the drug for personal use has never been criminalized."
they were on the right track already...but they went backwards.
from decriminalization, to registration and databases.

choosing between a government monopoly on distribution and an "organized crime" monopoly, I'll choose the organized crime monopoly....if I had my druthers, there would be neither, it would be just another commodity industry.

under their laws ,personally, I'd still buy from a private party...ta' hell with their consumption databases and registration.

they didn't move forward, they moved backwards... pot was already decriminalized for personal use and possession... they have imposed additional burdens, not taken away any.

the only winner in this is government... they get to make money by being a drug dealer.

Well, the income from a publicly controlled mariguana trade, means no need for new regulations, and more income into the public sector, meaning less taxes and less borrowing, and more public services.

The only reason you guys oppose it is your distaste for anything under democratic oversight, you'd prefer it be an unaccountable corporation taking the profits out.

we'd probably all be better off if marlboro was selling pot instead of cigarettes.

*looks Uruguay up on the map*

Because I couldn't think of their location off the top of my head.

South America: East of Argentina - South of Rio Grande du sol
