Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitutiona

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

This bolsters my earlier point about Ron Paul not being the leader the Libertarians need to break the duopoly of the two party system.

If you talk the talk, you must walk the walk.

What Ron Paul has proposes as a "fix" for SS has NO changes for current retirees. Think, before you drink, even koolaid.

I also fully expect that he receives Medicare, too.

I don't think Congress qualifies for Medicare. Their system is for life and infinitely better.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

This situation is not surprising. What he says and what he does are not necessarily the same thing upon closer inspection.

When it comes to the nation's fiscal deficits, Ron Paul has asserted that he has never voted for a budget that has a deficit. Technically that's accurate. In substance, he's contributed. He has been very active in inserting earmarks into those bills. In other words, he has been active in allocating appropriations that contribute to the nation's deficits. He has merely voted against the bills even as he has helped divide the spending to create the impression of "fiscal sainthood" so to speak. One can't have his cake and eat it, too.

When it came to the financial crisis, he loudly and frequently condemned extraordinary measures as TARP. However, he proposed not even a single alternative. It's easy to criticize the effort of others when one isn't offering something of one's own that might well be subject to similar scrutiny.

In short, I am not at all surprised that he receives Social Security. I also fully expect that he receives Medicare, too.

In the end, the proverbial emperor is naked. However, one should not expect Paul's fervent supporters to see any flaws of any kind in their "prophet." However, the reality is that Ron Paul is just another political leader. He does not deserve to be exalted above all the rest. His actions are not extraordinary.

Another political actor chimes in.

Hey guys, he uses fiat currency too. Get the pitch forks.

That is nonsense. Ron Paul has indeed offered several bills for consideration, just that they go nowhere, rarely even making it out of committee. The ultimate in hypocracy is Obama, he blames our economic ills on the "Bush" tax rates yet gladly extends them and signs them into law. He had overwhelming control and support of demorats in congress for two full years yet NEVER suggested getting rid of the "Bush" tax rates, UNTIL after 2010 when he knew that the GOP would not allow them. Even then, he sought only a PARTIAL return to them, for only those in the TOP brackets, his "millionaires" that make $200K ($250K joint) or more. LOL

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

I have no real problem with it.

He pays into social security - why should he not take what he is entitled to?

I think it is a political mistake to keep taking it because the ignorant masses will judge him negatively for it.

But morally; if he is entitled to it and he is forced to pay into it - then I see little/nothing wrong with taking what the government owes him.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

i'm not sure this meets the hypocritical bar, since he paid in for his whole life. i think that Paul also doesn't believe in currency that isn't backed by gold or precious metals. is he a hypocrite if he uses a five dollar bill to buy a sandwich? i'd say no.

First, I never said that Rep. Paul has never introduced any bills. He has.

Second, I stated that Rep. Paul offered no bills during the financial crisis. One can go to Thomas.gov and look up Paul's legislation during the September-October 2008 period when TARP was being devised and then debated. One will find that he introduced no alternatives.

Third, I didn't go so far as to suggest that Rep. Paul is a hypocrite. I mentioned that what he says and what he does do not always match up. Moreover, I noted that he is just another political leader [in terms of stated views vs. actions]. There are good reasons why such differences exist and I don't necessarily condemn political leaders for such differences. My point is that Ron Paul should not be exalted as something special in the political arena. He isn't.

You missed the point.

If one wants to argue that he has no responsibility whatsoever for the fiscal deficits, then one should not partake in anything related to fiscal policy. That Rep. Paul has actively earmarked spending that contributes to deficits makes him indirectly responsible for the consequences of those expenditures.

In terms of fiat currency, that has been in place well before Rep. Paul was elected to Congress. Paul's use of such currency is not the same thing as his earmarking. He has no alternatives over the former. If he lives and works in the U.S., he must use U.S. currency. He does have alternatives over the latter. He could vote against the spending and choose not to allocate such spending either via the earmarking process.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

so he participates in a program that he considers to be Socialist and a ponzi scheme?

huh.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

I can hear the libertarians
Hes "ENTITLED" to it he paid into it
They stole his money, he should want to get it back and blahblahblah....heres what I say

PHONY!!!!!!!!!! PHONY!!!!!!!!!!!PHONY!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) may rail against Social Security insolvency in the public eye, but that hasn't stopped him from accepting the government checks.
The libertarian-leaning Republican and former presidential candidate admitted Wednesday that he accepts Social Security checks just minutes after he called for younger generations to wean themselves off the program, in an interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitutional

Not phony at all. Wanting to change the system doesn't mean one shouldn't use the system...especially when one is PAYING for said system.

He'd be a "PHONY" if he was saying it was unconstitutional and should be fought....and then once he reached the age to start drawing from it suddenly changed his mind and was against it.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

taking advantage of a system that you consider to be corrupt, criminal, & communist...is pretty darn hypocritical.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

What's next? Is that hypocrite paying his taxes, too? The nerve...

(sarcasm alert for any looney libs who might be confused otherwise)

Did you support the Bush Tax Cuts when they were passed Thunder?

If you didn't support the bills that enacted the Bush Tax Cuts, have you been giving back additional money in taxes that you've not claimed from the government to make up for the amount that you saved from a bill that was passed which you disagreed with?

Because, of course, you're not a hypocrite that functions within the system that is in place in reality rather than determining your life based on a fantasy land where everything you ever wanted is what actually is occuring, right?

Am I the only one here that thinks he is not being hypocritical at all here? He doesn't like the system, but if he has been forced to pay into it, I find no problem with him getting the funds back when they are due to him.

And when he talks about weening young people off of it, he isn't talking about not getting the money that is owed to them, he only means that you should plan your retirement as if social security won't be there for you, which isn't terrible advice. SS is not meant to serve as someone's main source of income during retirement.

Unfortunately with the destruction of the middle class, and the race to the bottom of the wage scale, it is the only option for millions of Americans...

um...he wouldn't go to jail and lose his House seat, if he chose to be consistent with his beliefs and not collect SS.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

Am I missing something or did Ron Paul come out and suggest that seniors should simply not take their Social Security checks? Has he been advocating that individuals simply forgo the system and I've just missed that? It'd be hypocritical if he was doing something he was telling others they shouldn't do. He'd be a hypocrite to say we should remove social security and then he voted to keep social security...it's not hypocritical to say that a program needs to end but to use said program during the time in which it's available.

I'm not a "fervent supporter" or someone that views him as a "prophet" and I've certainly had no issue speaking negatively about him when it's due....but this mindset and action isn't hypocritical, it's a rational and reasonable method of existing in the world.

If he paid into it, then he is entitled to it. If it's unconstitutional, then government forcing us to pay into it is also unconstitutional. I'd personally prefer to opt out and not take SS when I become of age. Since I've paid in $50,000 and counting, you bet your ass I'm going to take it when I am elligible.

You were forced to pay into it, you should get your money back. But whatever, the haters need to hate regardless of how illogical they're being.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

I'm against SS in principle but I fully expect to use it when I become qualified for it.
My money has been removed from me, for this program and as long as it still exists when I retire, I will take advantage of it.

That does not make one a hypocrite.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

so basically, RP is saying:

"Social Security is a Communist evil encroachment upon our Freedom & Liberty!!!! get it while its good"

No, that's not what is being said in the least.

Re: Ron Paul Admits He's On Social Security, Even Though He Believes It's Unconstitut

Anybody who makes more than $100,000 in retirement should not get SS......Mark Zuckerburg should NOT get it. ETC. ETC....

This thread is the tired old "if you advocate for a rule change you must not use the rule or some people will mistakenly call you a hypocrite". Of all the things wrong with Paul and his positions on the issues, and people want to make an issue of this? People who do not use resources available to them, even if they advocate against the resource being available, are idiots. This is the same type of stupidity that people use against Buffett and others, and is just as stupid as those stupid arguments.

I got no use for Ron Paul, but I have less use for stupid arguments.
