Re: Bloody terrorists killed 8 Turkish soldiers

PKK is a terrorist organization that has targeted civilians in the past. I strongly support Turkey in its fight against the PKK terrorist organization, I also strongly support its desire to preserve its territorial integrity against the demands of groups dedicated to carving it into ethnic statelets. Turkey's fragmentation would not be a stabilizing development. If anything, such an outcome could give new impulse to the many other sectarian movements that exist in an area running from southern Europe to Central Asia. The likely end result would be more bloodshed and more repression.

Despite my strong differences on certain aspects of Turkey's foreign policy (e.g., its increasing pro-Palestinian tilt), I recognize that the government is overall a moderate one. Turkey's citizens have good opportunity to live their lives in freedom and dignity. They also enjoy the basic freedom to choose their government. Not all of Turkey's neighbors can make similar claims.

At least eight Turkish soldiers have been killed and 16 others wounded in an attack by the members of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in southeast Turkey.

Local security services said the incident occurred in Yuksekova border region on Tuesday when the terrorists infiltrated into Turkey from their bases in northern Iraq to attack an army post in Yesiltas region in Hakkari province.

Reports said Turkish forces and combat helicopters pursued the attackers in the mountainous region which has been the scene of violent clashes between security forces and the PKK rebels in the past.

"Operations are continuing in the region. According to preliminary findings, 10 terrorists were rendered ineffective," the local governor's office said.

Thousands of PKK elements are believed to be based in mountain hideouts in northern Iraq, from where they regularly launch attacks on Turkish targets.

PKK is a terrorist group that launched an armed insurgency in 1984 to gain autonomy.

Listed as a terrorist group by Ankara and most of the international community, the group is held responsible by Turkey for the loss of nearly 45,000 lives over the past two decades.

Not sure how you can classify people attacking soldiers as terrorists. Now if these people had blown up civilians perhaps people could agree with you. You are in a war with these folks so it seems unfair to call them terrorists.

It does not appear that PKK wants issues regarding the Kurdish minority to be resolved as there seem to be ongoing discussions. The talks should continue despite the PKK efforts to dismantle these efforts. Iran has provided a safe haven for these terrorists and that border should be under more scrutiny. The path to peace and a cohesive plan in not through weapons, but, discussion. PKK is on foll's mission.

Moreover, the PKK are terrorists and do target civilians:

"The terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has continued with its campaign of kidnapping civilians and on Friday Tunceli Deputy Governor Ali Güldoğan told the press that a group of PKK terrorist stopped a vehicle carrying five road workers and kidnapped four of them."
Terrorist PKK kidnaps 4 civilians in Tunceli

"PKK militants forced three people into the woods, including a gendarmerie private who was on his way to visit his family in Gaziantep."
LOCAL - PKK kidnaps one soldier, two civilians

Those are terrorist attacks. The one in this thread seems to be army versus army. I see that as different, sorry.

Not moderate when it comes to Kurds. The Turkish government has committed war crimes against those people. Kurds will one day have a homeland.

While I agree that at times they do target civilians and thus act as terrorists. However this time they took on Turkish troops.

As to negotiations, I do not think this Turkish government would negotiate in good faith.

Let's also remember that not long ago Turkish planes killed a number of Kurdish kids, in what may be viewed as an act of terror.

Military and government installations would be considered proper target when fighting the authority.
