Alan Simpson Slams Fellow Republicans For Unwillingness To Compromise

Republicans in DC need to hold their ground so the Obama credit rating can go down another notch.

From this comment it would seem that you missed that conservatives in Congress already have a lower approval rating than the president. And you want that lowered another notch?

he's showing that he cares more about defeating Obama than the health & welfare of his country.

Hardly a mystery - It prevented states from laying off more workers...

Only momentarily...once the money ran out the states' layoffs started and have been continuing but I'm sure you already knew this as I've noticed you are quite knowledgeable on the BLS data.

People figured that out about the GOP in congress after the 2010 election. That is why their approval rating is lower than the presidents.

You are making the argument for more stimulus to the states, not less. But that works for me.

I'm sure you would see it that way when in fact the stimulus only delayed the inevitable, state worker layoffs. And more stimuli would again only delay the inevitable. If I thought it would work I WOULD argue for it but each state has varying fiscal issues that they must address individually. Throwing more money at them will not solve them.

IMO, the stimulus would have been MUCH more effective if 'dumped' into the economy at the bottom, ie taxpayers. This would have enabled folks to buy stuff paying sales taxes to finance state employees. Both win in this scenario but being the state portion was dumped in the economy midway down the government ladder it was inefficient in its use and predictable in its results.

First of all he is a RINO,Perhaps that is why is a Former Sen.Alan Simpson and not Sen.Alen Simpson.

Second the federal government shouldn't get one more dime until it makes every cut it can. Giving more money to someone who has a spending problem only makes the problem worse. It doesn't solve the problem. Promising to cut only a dollar when you still are spending a 100 bucks over budget and wanting more money doesn't solve the problem. Make actual significant cuts and then talk tax increases.

Everyones a rino to the teaparty...I dont pay attention to that label

Just for curiosities sake who applies the ‘dino’ label?

Better to give a starving man nothing to tide him over during the worst hunger. That's some logic you've got going there.

The largest part of the stimulus went to tax cuts for the working class.

The GOP plans to decrease taxes not for the working class where they would stimulate the economy the most, they have proposed even bigger tax cuts for the wealthy while reducing benefits to the working class to pay for them. Thanks but no thanks!

So after you give this ‘starving man’ something to ‘tide him over’ what is he going to eat tomorrow? Appears lack of logic to me…

$237b of $831b is ‘largest part’? Maybe next year in the second grade you will learn basic arithmetic.

You moving out of the country? Good luck with that...

why?

what crisis are we approaching?

interest on the debt is still below 7% of the federal budget. so where is the crisis?

what I think is going on is that Conservatives HATE entitlements, whether we can afford them or not, and have manufactured this crisis to scare the American people.

but this crisis..is a faux crisis.

Are you saying our country is not trillions of dollars in debt with that number increasing every day and that this whole debt thing is a lie manufactured to scare people into wanting to cut entitlement programs?

The crops return when the drought is over.

$237b of $831b is ‘largest part’?

Yes, what other part got more?

"$246,869,000,000 for individual tax cuts
$6,150,000,000 for business incentives
$3,540,000,000 for business
$6,858,000,000 for other tax relief
$19,968,000,000 renewable energy tax credits
$95,136,000,000 aid to states and local governments
$20,352,000,000 for health care
$62,310,000,000 aid to people affected by economic downturn"

nope, that's not what I'm sayin'.

The crops return when the drought is over.

So since droughts by definition are extended periods, how will this ‘starving man’ last without another ‘tide him over’ meal?

Yes, what other part got more?

Ok, good point. Obviously, I must brush up on my comprehensive reading. I read ‘largest part’ as ‘majority of’ not ‘part of parts’. My mistake…carry on.

Hardly a mystery - It prevented states from laying off more workers and turned around the economy. To me that beats the hell out of another great depression that we were headed into.

Government workers are an overhead expense to the economy. To an extent they are necessary: we need police and fire protection, national defense, etc., but taking tax money from the productive segments of society in order to add squads of leaf rakers and administrators will not improve the economy. The "stimulus" failed because the government misdirected it into more government workers.

Then how is being trillions of dollars in debt a " faux crisis" if that's not what you are saying?

So what determines if you're productive or not is dependent on who pay your salary...where exactly is this definition from?

by compromise, we really mean raise taxes now, and promise to cut spending 10 years from now.

I don't find this to be a fair compromise at all.

Are you saying our country is not trillions of dollars in debt with that number increasing every day and that this whole debt thing is a lie manufactured to scare people into wanting to cut entitlement programs?

No the debt is real..its the rich that are blaming entitlement programs when its just as much them if not more...sending jobs to china out of greed and putting americans out of work that can no longer pay taxs and the corporations that made billions and paid nothing...reverse class warfare by the rich isnt working

The productive members of society create wealth. They make things and grow things.

Perhaps you have heard the story of the cruise ship that sank, and the five survivors who made it to a desert island were all salesmen. To pass the time, they started trading their hats back and forth. By the time they were rescued, they were all millionaires.

If you believe that story, you will probably vote for Obama.

Then how is being trillions of dollars in debt a " faux crisis" if that's not what you are saying?

its a faux crisis...because 6% of our national budget going to paying the interest on our debt...is not a crisis.

sure, it should be addressed. but should we be risking another downgrading of our credit rating over it? **** no!!!!

and yet, the GOP seems to want to continue with the bull****, in order to have our credit rating downgraded again, so they can blaim it on Obama. This is how low they have to go..to win an election.

So say the SEC officials that make sure that markets are transparent add no value? Compare unregulated markets to regulated markets and there's a much higher premium for borrowing and raising capital expected to offset the lack of transparency. That seems to add value to me to markets in general.

How about Department of tranportation and their maintaining of infrastructure? The engineers for them don't add value or make the economy grow? How about teachers? Jeeze....you think literacy and education might of played a part in building the economy.

Of course...none of them add anything to you?
