House to examine plan for United Nations to regulate the Internet(edited)

I just read a piece on the hill.com about a proposal for the United Nations to have full control over the internet. Beacons of internet freedom like Russia, and China are in full support of the proposal (sarcasm should be duly noted). This would take the internet out of the hands of private businesses and into the wonderful hands of the biggest bureaucracy in the world. We're talking about our freedoms being taken away not from our own government, but an international coalition of politicians and bureaucrats. This would mean that upcoming businesses who rely on the internet and its freedoms would be bogged down by political regulations and decent.

The American people fought and won against SOPA and PIPA. We lost the battle for CISPA. This is entirely new form of internet control that violates our Constitution by allowing an international entity to control our freedoms.

The positive thing about this is both sides of the aisle on Capital Hill are against it. Even people within the Obama Administration are against it, which is surprising considering their history on liberties of the internet and people in general.

My hope is that this thing is dead on arrival when it comes to Congress or whatever committee. Probably the president's desk as Congress is seemingly allocating all its power to the executive branch recently.

Now, when you read an article that said the proposal would give the UN "more control," how did you manage to translate that to "full control?"

The UN shouldn't have any control over the internet.

    Not likely going to happen.

Although if I was the US government and I wanted to take control of the internet I would do some false flag cyber attacks that would be on the scale of 9-11 and then people would gladly yield their internet liberties to me for the sake of the security I could provide them.

Does the internet need any regulation? If so, under whose jurisdiction should it fall?

Re: United Nations proposal to control and regulate the Internet

More right wing ranting trying to stir the chit. Bait the Rightwing nuts with an oldie but goodie, the E-Vile UN.

When mentioning the 'bastions of fairnest' why did the OP leave out our dear allies the Saudis. They are one of those bastions looking into government control of the Interwebz. Kind of forgot those guys didn't you?

But it is true right wing propaganda is to declare some talk as a done deal. For that matter I think calling it a proposal is a bit premature. I doubt this gets past the 'talking' about it stage. There maybe some uniformity guidelines but not censorship or the ability to shut down the World Wide Web as a sanctioned act.

But lets all rant because the UN is mentioned and right wingnuts just love to hate the UN...

Well, perhaps there IS some benefit in being in a country that is denied membership in the UN. *sarcasm off*

Re: United Nations proposal to control and regulate the Internet

The UN should have zero control over the internet. None. Zip. The UN should only delegate and try to solve world problems among different countries, not control the free flow of information around the world.
