Former Secretary of State Colin Powell supports same-sex marriage — and he doesn’t necessarily believe the issue should be left up to states.
“I have no problems with it,” Powell, who served under George W. Bush, says in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that airs in full at 5 p.m. Wednesday. “I don’t see any reason not to say that [same-sex couples] should be able to get married under the laws of their state or the laws of the country.”

Oh god what is this world coming to!? Is this going to help Obama out more?

****ing good for him. This is excellent news.

Powell has always been a rational man. I would love to vote for him but he, wisely, has no interest in running for office.

Obama played his last card to win votes and Powell did some fine tuning.

And what office is Powell running for?

Former Secretary of State still has some standing.

Of course he does, but what motivation other than "doing the right thing" does the former Secretary have? Again, he's not running for office. He has no motivation to take a position on the matter unlike the President. To link the motivations or purposes of the former Secretary and the President is, at best, lazy logic.

good for him. as for whether it helps Obama, i don't care much. former and current movers and shakers pointing out today's premier civil rights issue helps those who are suffering discrimination, however, and that is important.

hopefully the SCOTUS will eventually rule that the equal protection clause applies, and the issue will be settled.

It is quite possible he had no ulterior motive other than to hopefully sway more people into supporting gay marriage. I know it is easy to be cynical about such things. But in 2008 he went against his party and supported Obama for President and he wasn’t awarded with any type of office. Powell is one of those guys, I think, who would serve at the pleasure of the President (whoever it may be), but would not seek out the job.

And I’m not some Powell fanboy either. I lost a lot of my respect for him during the WMD fiasco.

Who cares? People overestimate how much these endorsements matter. They are great, but they are not going to change long held beliefs and opinions. Only exposure to gay and lesbian families will change those views. It will be awhile yet before the same sex marriage issue will be winning at the poll booth. It will eventually, but it isn't going to get there simply because famous people come out in support.
