    It is quite possible he had no ulterior motive other than to hopefully sway more people into supporting gay marriage. I know it is easy to be cynical about such things. But in 2008 he went against his party and supported Obama for President and he wasnít awarded with any type of office. Powell is one of those guys, I think, who would serve at the pleasure of the President (whoever it may be), but would not seek out the job.

    And Iím not some Powell fanboy either. I lost a lot of my respect for him during the WMD fiasco.

    Who cares? People overestimate how much these endorsements matter. They are great, but they are not going to change long held beliefs and opinions. Only exposure to gay and lesbian families will change those views. It will be awhile yet before the same sex marriage issue will be winning at the poll booth. It will eventually, but it isn't going to get there simply because famous people come out in support.
