Kodak may be going under, but apparently they could have started their own nuclear war if they wanted, just six years ago. Down in a basement in Rochester, NY, they had a nuclear reactor loaded with 3.5 pounds of enriched uranium—the same kind they use in atomic warheads. But why did Kodak have a hidden nuclear reactor loaded with weapons-grade uranium? And how did they get permission to own it, let alone install it in a basement in the middle of a densely populated city?

I have but one comment to make here......

WTF for 2000 dollars, Alex.

Article is here.

Oh. Okay, well that's interesting.

.....wait. WHAT!?!

I don't know how difficult it is to build and maintain a reactor. Not sure what safety/inspection criteria the Feds and state regulators have for a private company to hold enriched uranium and if the facility was ever inspected. (not so sure how easy it is to make enriched uranium or just how after 9/11 a private company could hold it but what the hey) Not sure just how a private non defense company gets enriched uranium.

But sure am curious about it all now... :)

Low yield uranium is actually pretty common, the degradation of it creates radon gas.
The guy I linked to, used radium in an attempt to create a breeder reactor.

He was successful in enriching material.
Owning uranium is not illegal either.

Owning uranium or enriched uranium? I just have to think if a publicly held company has to report earnings, and be subject to SEC scrutiny, however lax that may be, then holding enriched uranium would be subject to on site inspection at least as much as a meat plant. Out in the desert maybe one thing, in the basement of a NY building...

I dunno, just sound hinky when Iran is being tore a new one over enriching uranium. So it is legal for a company to enrich uranium, with apparently little if any oversight, but not a nation?

Well, Kodak IS known for photography. Maybe they wanted to take before and after pictures of Iran. LOL.

Hmmmm, maybe Kodak is cahooting, there I said it, CAHOOTING with Iran. Like Germany using other countries to skirt Treaties after WWI, Iran is using multinationals as fronts for 'research'. If Kodak hadn't of gone belly up we wouldn't have this glimpse into the belly of the beast!!!!!

CAHOOTING- 'time to remember' my ass!!!!!

Uh, might be time for my meds.... gotta go...

Owning uranium in general is not illegal.
Not sure about enriched uranium, but the story indicates that they used it for testing purposes.
Not for malicious reasons.
