“If Rep. Ryan thinks a budget that takes food and health care away from millions of vulnerable people upholds Catholic values, then he also probably believes Jesus was a tea partier who lectured the poor to stop being so lazy and work harder,” said Gehring. “This budget turns centuries of Catholic social teaching on its head. These Catholic leaders and many Catholics in the pews are tired of faith being misused to bless an immoral agenda.”

Bear in mind that the group that is criticizing Ryan is a Catholic progressive group, and yes, they also have their own political agenda. Question is which agenda is Christian - This one, or the one it criticizes?

So here's the deal - Does Ryan's budget follow the teachings of Jesus or not? Why do you believe so, or why not? Is this group taking Christianity out of context when it makes it's accusations against Ryan? Why do you think so? Is America a Christian nation? If so, then does the government have a responsibility to follow the teachings of Jesus?

Later in the thread I have a follow up question for discussion, and it will be based on the responses I receive in this thread.

Catholic group ≠ Catholic church

Also, progressive and Catholic are a contradiction in terms, and I will gladly bear the brunt of the jokes that will ensue from that admission.

As to the meat of the article, always beware when two groups are claiming to be more Catholic than the other. Usually, neither are particularly Catholic if you dig...

And just because one says one is Catholic, that doesn't mean it's true.

OK, so who is following the teachings of Jesus? This group or Paul Ryan, when he delivers his budget. Or do the teachings of Jesus not belong in government? And why do you believe so?

Perhaps Jesus would not be so quick to be judgemental.

So I Googled to learn more about the Faith in Public Life organization, which I'd never heard of. It's supported by
ACORN and George Soros.

I find it hypocritical for any Catholic group, progressive or otherwise, to lecture us about taking care of the poor.

The Catholic church, just in the United States, ranks it right in the middle of the Fortune 500. Assets in the Vatican? Their art collection alone is priceless....which, of course, they have no intention of selling since they have it valued on their books at one euro.

Yet they close Catholic churches and schools in neighborhoods too poor to support them. In Philadelphia alone, in January, the Catholic church announced the closing of 44 elementary schools and 4 of its high schools. Instead of doing this in an orderly fashion, they are simply closing the doors forcing students to scramble.

St. Vincent DePaul Society, the charity arm of the Catholic church, sends its higher echelon volunteers as well as St. Vincent DePaul Society staff on vacations around the world, fully paid for by the society...at least one trip a year...two weeks, all expenses paid for "seminars." The equivalent of corporate junkets, these trips cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, as the volunteers get their air fare, all meals, and hotel expenses paid.

Perhaps they shouldn't throw stones.

I'm pretty sure this Faith in Public Life group doesn't have anything to do with what you've listed and that they'd agree with much of what you've said.

Im a non practicing catholic.....I do not like ryans plan in any way shape or form...but I dont believe catholism has a thing to do with it....

Jesus had a bone to pick with hypocrites, I don't think he'd like any side.

My impression of the gospels was that the insane amount of hypocrisy is so deeply ingrained into everything we do, Jesus never had any time to actually get to his own agenda. My impression is it's like trying to teach a caveman how to build jet engine but they don't even know what metals are for.
