Harry Potter actor jailed for 2 years over London riots

Crabbe! Well, at least he was cast in the perfect role.

Anyone watch the news clip they had? Sounds to me like everyone that was involved...even slightly....with that riot is getting made examples of.

"You were pictured on a number of occasions with a bottle full of petrol with a rag as a wick," the judge said.
"I accept entirely the jury's verdict that you did not throw or have any intention of throwing it but merely being in possession of it would have been terrifying to anyone who saw you."

Amusing.

Not harsh enough sentences IMO...

Not much of a Potter fan, but I did see the first 3 movies.
That guy does indeed fit the part as a bully in film since he seems to be one when not filming. I'm wondering why he got off so light. 2 years only? He had a fire bomb in his hand.

2 years in prison is harsh enough for a young kid who made some shocking choices in a crazy couple of days

You are 'man' enough to decide to enter a riot which resulted in theft and destruction of other peoples property...sorry...you deserve man sized punishments.

and again 2 years is long enough given the circumstances and how many people were involved in the riots, you want to teach this kid a lesson so he becomes a better person! You smack him with a 5 years + he's not going to come out a model citizen

He participated in riots with a Molotov cocktail!

I think the whole model citizen ship set sail a few years ago ...

you realise that the whole point of Prison is to reform and shape people back into model citizens....

Huh...and here I thought prison was a punishment. If you think the prisons are designed for reform you have no idea what goes on there.

Hmm...bible classes, free college level education, GED's are able to be gotten, counseling is available......its not so far fetched to think that prisons are meant to reform also.

But lets say that you are correct...why shouldn't we try to reform them instead of just punish them?

It's a wonderful notion. My ideas of prison reform would be much more in line with 'reforming'. That simply isn't what happens and frankly...reform is good but without the punitive aspect there isn't near the motivation for many to not reoffend.

Think I'm going ask for what you mean by "reform" and how you would go about it.

Agreed. It's not like he raped or killed anyone.

Just a dumb kid, with the rest of his life to change.

Reform is basically impossible, even with the programs and all the social crap they throw at you while you are locked up. The only way that any reform can be achieved is if the person wants to reform. 95 % could care less, been there and done that. I've seen people who keep screwing up because they have no place to go when they get out. Sad but true, there is no reform in prison and these shows you see on tv are pretty much crap. Anybody who puts their face in front of a camera discussing prison politics would be in deep s**t with the powers to be.

If I were king there would be two types of prisons...one for violent offendersd and murderers and one for habitual offenders. Marijuana would be legalized so we wouldnt have to worry about jailing users. Violent offenders (and anyone with a sentence greater than, say, 20 years) would go to a remote and isolated prison. I dont know if I would necessarily go with a supermax format....just someplace very isolated...like...it would take a few hours to get there. Snipers on the corners of the outer wires. But for MOST offenders...I would set up a boot camp type system. Forget about daily, weekly, or even monthly visitation. up at 5, heavily structured existence, PT, classes, structured recreation, homework, bed. Everyone would have a work schedule. Guards would be rotated shift and even system and drug tested weekly and wo be unto anyone caught trying to smuggle anything in. No colors, no separate styles...2-6 year long boot camp. Anyone screws up...thanks for playing...you go to the maximum security prison with the violent offenders. Those are just the basics. It would include other facets...highly qualified life sentence candidates trained to be educators, etc. My personal opinion is that violent offenders arent going to be easily and readily 'rehabilitated'.

There should be a punishment phase. There should be some opportunities for rehab. of course anything that would be effective in prison would be undone if the prisoners then go right back into the same environments they left. Its why we need to stop looking at our problems from a onesy perspective and start using holistic approaches to our problems in the country. Drug laws need to change, schools need to be fixed, the illegal immigration problem needs to have a solution, we need to revitalize our industrial base, we need to invest our foreign aid at home, etc.

I haven't read the story but I'm asking this more as a hypothetical rather than a defense of this guy.

So do you mean that even if he was not personally involved in the theft or property destruction, as in he didn't actually steal anything nor did he destroy anyone's property, you still would find him guilty and imprison him because he was part of the crowd?

Yeah, the British authority are going after people who were involved in the riots, people who were just there when the rioting happened, and even people who just made posts of support for the rioters on FB or the internet.

And they British courts gave out mass sentencing too.

It's ****ing crazy in the UK, top and bottom.

the whole thing is a mess! Thats why I dont really think it would be very fair to slam these young men/women in prison for a long period of time. I would personally prefer to see community service handed out and help these kids do some good in the areas that they live and hopefully learn from their actions.

It was a small part. Perhaps his assets should be seized to make restitution.

Of course he is not going in as a model citizen. Garbage in. Garbage out. Or so we used to say in the 70s in my software classes.
