A rider is passing through Congress which will increase taxes on roll your own cigarette stores.

    Talked about Pros:

-"The roll your own cigarette stores are a tax loophole," says Senators and Congressmen and Phillip Morris.

-We need taxes, got a budget problem.

    -It's a bad addiction.

-My daddy died from smoking, screw Tobacco!

    Talked about Cons:

-It's a regressive tax, poor people smoke more.

-It's just big Tobacco snuffing out the competition and stepping on the little guy.

    What's not being talked about.

Big Tobacco Cigs have higher nicotine content, they soak paper in nicotine and then mix it in with the tobacco. So while roll your own cig stores might be half the cost they also probably only have half the nicotine, and if that's the case then this is just another case of Big Tobacco maintaining their market share because nobody is going to pay the same price for half the nicotine.

People smoking with these roll your own cigs are inadvertantly subjecting themselves to less nicotine, and therefore less addiction. In a way this new upstart industry helps stop smoking.
There is a loophole around that law. Roll your own tobacco companies use a coarser grade of tobacco, and label it as pipe tobacco (completely within the law), thereby doing an end run around the extra taxes for "cigarette" tobacco. I buy all my tobacco online at 11 bucks a pound, and my smoking habit only costs me 70 cents per pack. For a tube injector, I recommend the Top-O-Matic. Costs a little more than the others, but doesn't break down after a couple of months. The one I am using now I have had for more than 2 years.

We buy the "Good Stuff" brand from the Indian smoke shop...16.99 a pound. I know it's cheaper to buy on line, I just haven't done it yet. I buy the Premier tubes. We smoked Marlboro or Camels before switching. This ^ is every bit as good.

What does B&B sell that would be comparable to that brand?

You have to look around a little to get the best prices, but they always have decent tobacco at $10.99 a pound. Shipping is free if you make a 200 dollar order or higher.

    Sin tax--BAH!!
That's the problem, because I roll my own too and they now want to jack the price of ryo tobacco stuff, to that of regular cigarettes.

ok ill tell ya'll how to bypass laws if you smoke,if you state has a nearby indian reservation, you can buy cigarettes or other items tax free so long as it was made by native americans on or off the reservation and sold on an indian reservation.i used to buy 100% natural cigarettes with cotton filters and no additives for $14 a carton, werent as good as regular, but what do you expect without the taste good chemicals.

federal government cannot bypass this by treaty, because the treaty states indian reservations dont have to charge state or federal taxes on anything sold on their reservation if it was indian made.

The Roll Your Own Tobacco owner here acts like the Soup-Nazi off that Seinfeld show. Accusing people of shopping at other places, with quite a bit of passion.

Right now it seems, ryo tobacco is safe, but stores who make cigs with ryo machines for people.
Have been reclassified as tobacco manufactures for the purpose of taxing at the same rate as formal manufacturers.

Not sure how long our gravy train will last.
