Democratic officials Wednesday launched a two-pronged attack on states with new laws requiring identification before voting, the highlight being a call to boycott Coke, Walmart and others that back a leading organization pushing for voter ID laws.

Voter ID laws seem common sense to me. It creates more confidence in the election results and reduces fraudulent voting.

This push to boycott Walmart just makes me want to go there right now and buy several things. To start I could use some more ammo…9mm, 7.62 x 39mm, .308, and some shotgun shells.

Best case scenario for the boycotters is half the country boycotts the world's largest retailer. So to Wal-Mart, it would be kind of like walking into a cloud of misquitoes....an annoying distraction that leaves a few temporary spots of irritation.

Then again, Wal-Mart is the most accessible store in the country and, in some areas, the only chain store available and thus the only source of decent prices (and perhaps, in more rural areas, the only qualified SNAP participant). Perhaps Coke might take a slight hit, but I seriously doubt Wal-Mart is shaking in its boots right now.

the south will keep walmart a coke's profits strong, and in any area heavily populated by liberals, the stores would just eat the loss they would incur from the boycott and move on.

plus its a given that alot of democrats would not boycott walmart in favor of huge selection and low low prices:cool:

I hope they go through with it. I dont support their reasons but walmart is the most disgusting corporation on earth and does more to destroy lives than any other group, organization or person in the history of the world. I support any efforts to boycott walmart.

After seeing how the 2007 voter ID law in Georgia didn't negatively effect minority voter turnout, there is no legitimate reason to oppose such laws. In fact, they found that only 1 in 2000 registered voters didn't have the proper ID and needed to obtain one prior to voting.

So if opposition to the ID laws isn't to allow voting by convicted felons and non-US citizens, then what exactly is the reason?

LOL

Occurs to me that instead of wasting time organizing a boycott, these people should use that energy to help those poor folkd who are so deaf, dumb and blind that they can't figure out how to get a state I.D. I'd love to know how these people cash checks.

I'd LOVE to see some sort of sourcing on this.

I have a hard time believing they're actually doing that. especially since it's a state-issue and many states alreayd have such laws.

Boycotting Walmart is never a waste of time.

not a fan of walmart so i don't shop there, but coke would have to do a lot to get me to boycott them.

if i were to cease drinking caffeine free diet, i'm reasonably certain coke's stock would fall the next day in trading.

they do it by encouraging sweat shops and extreme poverty and horrid working conditions for people all over the world. They do it by taking over towns economies and forcing their competition to shut down. They do it by ruinging small businesses. They do it by treating their employees like utter **** with crap wages and even ****tier benefits. They do it by selling the lowest quality of products imaginable. Walmart incorporates every dirty tactic they can to benefit themselves. Walmart is why our economy, and much of the worlds economy is going to ****. Nothing walmart does benefits humanity in any way.

For some reason I feel like going to walmart and buying a coke.

id go to walmart right now if it wasnt 15 miles away.

i could go to target which is closer but people there generally frown upon me walking in there in camo or wearing a grease stained white shirt and a wrench in my back pocket.

... They do it by taking over towns .

So by winning in fair, legal competition in the spirit of the freem market, they are all that is evil in the world?
Didn't Walmart beging dominating because they had innovated better logistics and and a better business model, that people CHOSE to support with their feet/dollars?
They take over towns? You mean the towns allow them to come in, and the people buy their stuff? Crazy! This is outrageous!!

I don't shop at Wal-Mart, but why would you want to destroy so many peoples preferred place to shop, and where many choose to be employed? Your way or the highway? Should any business opening its doors check with you first to see if on a whim you like them or not? What a mini-tyrant you are!

Most of what you said can apply to almost any major corporation in existence. And, for that matter, most high-end brands.

I wouldn't call moving into a town, lowering your prices to the point it drives local businesses out, then raising your prices without competition exactly fair.

Links for this practice??

Fair my ass. Any company that treats their employees decently or doesnt partake in the disgusting labor practices overseas to keep prices a bit lower can't compete with wal marts prices. Its not free market. They are creating a monopoly and forcing jobs out of the United States. They are lowering the quality of life here and around their world for their own benefit. And ignorant greed by disgusting consumers is allowing them to do it.

thats not how walmart works, they raise their prices 10% and then give a 10% off special, causing idiots to think they are getting a deal but paying normal retail.

i dont know about the rest of the country but the kmart out here is alot cheaper than walmart.

No, fair by legal and free-market standards (predominantly choice). Not your personal standards.

It's disgusting to employ hard workers from other countries?
Its disgusting to have low prices? It's their ****ing business model, has been for decades.

you really think wal mart offering jobs oversease lowers the quality of life overseas? You think the person who now shops at once place rather than ToysRUs then department stores, then a grocery store, have a lower quality of life?

I hope people are kind enough to let you shop where you like...

The majority of consumers are "digusting"? I believe you have some serious issues living in a free country.

I mostly drink Coke Zero, which we usually buy at WalMart. Unfortunately, we buy so much Coke products from WalMart as it is that it's really not practical for us to respond to this idiocy by buying even more than we already do.

So you use this boycott rant to state that you want to up your arms. Interesting what a seemingly irrelevant tie in you chose to use.

Muciti, I always agree with you! But not here. And here's my subjective reason:

I have family in coal country Kentucky...real boonies. I used to visit them every year. The nearest chain store was about 50 miles away. Manchester, KY to London, KY, before the Daniel Boone Parkway cut that in half. It was close to an hour-and-a-half drive. That's how far they had to drive to get competitive prices on anything. The local store owners, like a dimestore, drug store, grocery store, were, well, like having to shop in a gas station's grocery mart. The prices was sky high. People were eking out livings working for these little stores...minimum wage...no benefits. Those -- and the underground coal mines. Not even vacations.

Then came WalMart. Suddenly, people could buy things at much more competitive prices. Suddenly, there were 75 or so (not sure on this) much better jobs. An opportunity for advancement. An opportunity to earn more than minimum wage. Hospitalization. Vacations. When WalMart came to town? The town began to flourish.

That's my subjective view. Then, there's this:

Charitable giving at a glance for fiscal year 2011:
  • $732 million in cash and in-kind gifts in the U.S., up from $467 million in fiscal year 2010
  • $66.8 million in cash and in-kind gifts in international markets, up from $45 million in fiscal year 2010
  • $114 million from Walmart’s customers and associates through in-store giving programs that benefit local charities
  • $913 million in charitable contributions from Walmart, the Foundation, our customers and our associates around the globe
  • The Chronicle of Philanthropy has named Walmart the biggest cash contributor to nonprofit and community organizations in the United States.
  • Our Volunteerism Always Pays Program awards nonprofit organizations with financial contributions when Walmart associates volunteer. In fiscal year 2011, associates volunteered 1.3 million hours.
  • On behalf of Sam’s Club, the Walmart Foundation gave more than $89 million in cash and in-kind gifts to support local U.S. organizations focusing on education, health and children’s programs in fiscal year 2011.

Walmart’s Commitment to Hunger
  • In 2010, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation made a historic $2 billion commitment to help end hunger in America. The Fighting Hunger Together initiative will provide 1.1 billion pounds of food from Walmart facilities and $250 million to hunger relief organizations through 2015.
  • In fiscal year 2011, our food donation program provided more than 256 million pounds of food to local food banks, the equivalent to 197 million meals. These in-kind contributions value more than $407 million. The Walmart Foundation also provided $62 million in grant funding to U.S. hunger relief organizations.

Some examples of how our charitable giving helps communities:
  • Providing funds to train 2,000 young people in green building skills while constructing 170 sustainable housing units through a $2.6 million grant to YouthBuild USA
  • Helping 11,000 families learn to cook healthy meals on a budget through a $1.5 million grant to Share Our Strength
  • Purchasing 4 million healthy meals and snacks for U.S. children through summer feeding programs last year

I'm not sure what it takes to go on your A-List, but I think this is a very good start.

meh... I worked for Walmart (Sam's Club) for six years and they did everything they claimed they never did. Worked me off the clock with threats and the night shift NEVER had a manager on the clock except when the District Officer was on their way for a visit then they'd jump on night-shift the night before to help pretty it up. So night-shift, without a manager, was locked in the building with the exceptions of the fire escape doors which were alarmed not to mention the loading dock was motion trigger alarmed.

I didn't mind that we were locked in so much but I've read where they denied all that stuff which is a bald-faced lie. I've not set foot in a walmart for about 15 years or so.

I wish more people would not step into walmart for 15 years. Nothing would make me happier than to see Walmart leave so we can get back to American manufacturing and businesses start opening back up.
