The South Dakota-based company that manufactures so-called pink slime, the ammonia-treated beef filler that has recently stirred up so much bile from the public, announced it is suspending operations at three of its four plants that pump out the product, due to falling sales. The decision came after consumers, parents, school administrators and national personalities like celebrity chef Jamie Oliver took to social media to protest the fact that the low-fat filler is included in foods without any indication on the label. Products that contain pink slime include fresh retail ground beef, low-fat hot dogs, lunch meats, pepperoni, meatballs, frozen entrees and canned foods.

This is wonderful news. I actually think they should be allowed to use this crap, IF they list it as an ingredient. They fought against this and the FDA in cahoots allows companies NOT to list this as an ingredient.

It's disgusting, but if you want to eat dog food scraps, you should be allowed to, however you should know about it.

That may be, but the company’s bound to have a tough time wooing back the hundreds of thousands of consumers who have already decided pink slime is too unappetizing to tolerate. For now it seems consumers might have their way, but one has to wonder, with pink slime off the production line, what additive will take its place?

how about "NONE" asshole. Maybe when we buy ground beef, it contains, only.... wait for it..... GROUND BEEF. All additives should be law be required to be listed, including the excluded pink slime.

a lot of "folks" will oppose that, as its just more regulations on businesses.

I'm all for listing this... but I'm even more for removing it out of the food menu... it can't possibly be healthy to eat this. It's .... low grade hot dog meat... I didn't even know it was possible to make something that gross...

What's the practical difference between eating ground dead cow, sliced dead cow or liquefied dead cow? Do you think there are no additives in your other "pure" meat products?

It seems to me that the ick factor has taken over (in a very blinkered manner) and what should have been a reasonable issue of labelling has turned in to a witch-hunt that will ultimately do more harm than good.

It's largest customer? The federal governments school lunch program. :prof

If you have eaten ground beef out in the last couple of years, You've eaten it.

I'm convinced a steak bought at your local supermarket is in the long run far more healthy for your body than anything that looks like play dough....

none, I usually see my meat alive before it's dead. I buy from organic farms, and other natural sources that don't **** with my food.

If you read up on butchering, this part of the meat, is where all the bacteria and stuff that would make you sick lies, In order to make it palatable to dogs, they slimed it... Then they got the idea they could sell it to humans....

If you want to eat it, Enjoy, but by law you should be forced to list it.

Uhm a witch hunt sounds like something is being hunted down, this company has lobbied for years to keep its pink slime from even being listed as an ingredient.

I couldn't agree with you any more, Rev. If people want to eat this slime, let 'em. But they do have the right to know they are indeed making that choice.

When I buy ground beef, I'd sure like to believe it's ground beef. 100% ground beef. No additives. If it isn't 100% ground beef, if it has chemicals in it to retard spoilage? I think it should be required to say that big and bold on the outside front packaging. Anything less than that....hidden in 3-point type in an ingredients list...I think is wrong.

Why do you just make things up?

I made nothing up. Its 100% true. Rand Paul personally tried to prevent a new regulation from being passed in the Senate, even though he actually had no problem with the regulation, because he is against ANY new regulations in principle.

But Sen. Paul has no objections to the regulations or how the bill would be paid for: just that it constitutes an expansion of federal authority.Read more: http://articles.businessinsider.com...erstate-natural-gas-association#ixzz1qQECZ3uw

Pink slime, they convinced the FDA to let companies not list it at all. I've been grinding my own beef for years.

This is why I wish our government would actually take a serious stance on the diets it endorses or at the very least not pretend it's serious. This goes for so many issues. You can't promote healthy eating and then put this **** in food. I mean why spend millions of dollars on promoting healthy diets if you're just going to do this? Why tell people not to do drugs if you're going to allow Pfizer to sell **** that makes your dick fall off? Why create the EPA and then sell entire forests to the highest bidder? It's ridiculous. I can't possibly be the only person to see the dyslexic nature of some of these policies.

So as usual, you bring nothing to the discussion. Dismissed.

I credit Jaime Oliver for exposing this to the masses, Watch this demonstration for exactly what you are eating, and how they get away without listing "ammonia" as an ingredient.

What he didn't know, is that the impetus behind "pink slime" was the federal school lunch program, that under Bush allowed this to be served unkown to us, to our schoolkids. this policy continues under Obama.

We have a saying out here, "parts of the cow no one ever thought to eat before". My wife says that of potted meat product. Now there is a difference between meat that has been preserved and meat that has been chemically altered. It does show the very weakened Government oversight that years of revolving door 'public service' political appointees and the push to get government out of the way of 'progress'.

But let us not stop at pink slime, I would advise city folk to not investigate any part of the food chain going from factory farm to meat counter, beef, chicken, pork, seafood...

people grimace at the thought of eating wild game but think nothing of eating that stuff on the styrofoam trays. I have to smile.

Rubbish. Humans have been eating the whole animal for thousands of years - it is only very recently that money and marketing have made offal and the like unpalatable to the public eye. Properly prepared and cooked, this is no less healthy than any other meat (and probably more so than some meat products). The negativity appears to be based 100% on the visual appearance of the "pink slime".

People eat mouldy milk, bird embryos, fungus, raw fish and bloated bird livers, often treating them as delicacies, so it's hardly fair to bring our rational in to food choices.

If you want to eat it, Enjoy, but by law you should be forced to list it.
And if that was the focus of the campaign, I'd be all for it. The attacks are much more aggressive though, hence schools banning food containing the substance from their canteens and companies going out of business. It's entirely the wrong apprach to the issue.

Yes, but the key aspect of a witch hunt is that it has been predetermined there is a witch so someone is going to burn, guilty or not.

Look what happened to Taco Bell and other companies when it came out they weren't using 100% beef in their tacos. Soy grits don't sound as bad as pink slime but its nice if they at least let their customers know. Most cans of hotdog chili's that use this product list it in the ingredients. Why does the movie "Soylent Green" come to mind, yuck.

yeah, all this drama does smell like a feel-good witch hunt, over a possible non-issue.
