NCAA tournament: Southern Mississippi apologizes for “Where’s your green card?” chant
By Cindy Boren

Officials at Southern Mississipi have apologized for an incident in which members of the school’s pep band taunted a Kansas State player with a racist chant during the teams’ NCAA tournament game Thursday afternoon.

Members of the band chanted “Where’s your green card?” as Kansas State’s Angel Rodriguez, an American player born in Puerto Rico, stepped to the free-throw line during the East Region game in Pittsburgh. (Buzzfeed video after the jump)

“We deeply regret the remarks made by a few students at today’s game,” Southern Mississippi President Martha Saunders said in a statement issued by the school Thursday. “The words of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university. We apologize to Mr. Rodriguez and will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action against the students involved in this isolated incident.”

Ok, unlike the high school kids chanting "USA", this is objectively offensive. There's a video of the incident at the (forthcoming) link. It's bad enough that students would say this, but you'd hope members of the band would be more disciplined than this. They should be embarrassed.

Their chant is what I'd expect from Mississippi.

Now that's what I call classy.. Mississippi edition

The only people responsible for this are the stupid kids who did the chant, which, btw, we don't even know where they're from (given they're college kids). It's not fair to blame the state. Gee, here I thought the OP would be something most of us could agree on. Oh well.

Ah just a joke, don't look too much into it. Granted, I'm glad that Southern Miss. lost, As I have K-State into the elite 8, but damn my brackets are messed up enough anyway.

It also shows the true intelligence level of the chanters as Rodriguez is from Puerto Rico and a U.S citizen, pretty damn hilarious.

What, you mean you didn't pick Duke, Mizzou and Michigan losing today? My god, how dumb're you?

;)

I can agree with you on the bolded. I mean, I guess it's not fair either to blame the basketball team, but I can't help wanting to spite the chanters. Unfortunately, now that it's apparent things like this can garner national attention, I bet we'll see more instances of this kind of thing for awhile.

I was stupid enough to have Duke winning it all in one of my brackets, so yeah. Not good, My dad had Mizzou going all the way too lol. Great day for upsets, who would have thought two 2's would fall

So a drunk college killed yelled something offensive to an opposing team at a sporting event?

Come on. This is silly. I've heard much, much worse cheers before. I know it's cliche and i'm gonna get flak for this, but this is just over-sensitivity to race issues. Perhaps the over-sensitivity is well-founded, given our-not-too-distant historical record on the matter, but it's over-sensitivity nonetheless.

On the court the kid handled it well, a good example as to how all collegiate athletes should deal with such jeering - by coolly brushing it off as just some silly taunting from some likely drunk opposing fans and not make a big deal out of it.

Pity not everybody has been able to handle it so well...

All five of my brackets are hilarious.

As a K-State student, I probably have a bias but I was shocked at this type of behavior. I'm glad they apologized. There's that Mississippi education that Puerto Ricans aren't citizens!

Well, unless Southern Miss band is really lax on it's rules, I doubt the kids chanting this were drunk. I don't really disagree, though, that we can be too sensitive. The guys who were chanting this were maybe just trying to get under the player's skin and get him flustered (though I have a hard time imagining what makes this acceptable to say for some people). Still, the fact that it was band members that did this makes them (sort of) representatives for the school, so the school was right to apologize and the band members should be, at least, kicked out of the band.

Why are people even remotely shocked that a university in the home of the Red Shirts would chant out racist slurs?

It's one thing to be offensive, it's quite another to be offensive and reveal yourself to be completely ignorant at the same time. That's what happened here.
