Senators McCain and Harkin seek to kill the dollar bill - The Hill's Floor Action

Personally, I think it's a great idea. The problem we've always had with dollar coins in the past is that the option was left open. This would take care of that. The only downside is that you'd have a pocket full of coins. The good deal is that it's easier with vending machines (how many times have you tried to find a good dollar to put in one?), and of course, this:

reports from the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) that indicate that abandoning the note could save around $5.5 billion over the next 30 years.

It's just common sense. We should do it and stop talking about it.

I like dollar bills. Strippers take dollar bills, vending machines take dollar bills and dollar bills fit neatly in wallets compared to coins. Dollar bills make nice tips. I see no reason to kill the dollar bill.

I would much prefer carrying dollar bills to always carrying around change.

Plus, I feel like it could psychologically induce a raise in prices.

I'd rather get rid of all the coins we already have.

McCain and Harkin are bored, useless and out of ideas... we'd get better policy out of a Georgetown frat party @ 3am.

Killing the dollar bill before the penny doesn't make any sense.

This is my first inclination. When I see McCain is for something I automatically react negatively.

I'm sure strippers would be happy to take a dollar coin if that's all they could get. Most vending machines take dollar coins, and you don't have to stand there trying to get every little wrinkle out of it before it will go in the machine.

Sorry, I like the coins. It makes sense.

The heck is wrong with dollar bills? I like dollar bills. Useful for vending machines.

On the other hand, dollar coins should go the way of the Dodo. They are heavier and take up more space in your wallet.

Have you ever seen a stripper take coins? I never seen a stripper taking coins.A stripper opening up he fanny pack so you can stick a dollar coin in it doesn't have the same appeal as a stripper pulling the side of her g-string so you can stick a dollar bill in.

Most vending machines take dollar coins,

A lot of vending machines also take fives. But you don't see anyone going we should replace the five dollar bill with a five dollar coin.

Dollar bills make sense to seeing how they take less room in your wallet. We have had dollar denomination coins for the past couple hundred years, but yet paper money dollars are more used. The reason paper money is more popular is because it is lighter and it fits nicely in your wallet.

That's because they haven't done it right. Like everything in America, we have this perverted idea that if you ease into it, it'll change on it's own. Remember trying to ease into the metric system? How'd that go?

To do it right you just say - nope, not printing anymore. The cost of minting a coin and the cost of printing a bill are close to the same, and coins don't need to be replaced as often. Government saves money, that's what I like about it.

My last job had change machine next to the ATM. It changed a $20 into 18 dollar coins and 8 quarters. Putting the dollar coins in the vending machines was so much easier than trying to get a dollar that it would take. Basically, the experience converted me.

Those who love everything European, want us to change.

I think that had to do with the fact Americans in general did not want to change to the metric system. America is the most wealthy and successful country in the world, why should we change whats been working for use just because the rest of the world who is less successful than the USA decides they want metric?

Coins are produce by the trillions and I would think since coin dies have to strike metal instead of paper then they would have to be replaced more often that the plates used for paper money.

Not everyone uses vending machines.Vending machines also use fives and other denominations depending on the type of vending machine.

Ah yes. Nothing like pelting the stripper with slugs of metal for fun. Probably enjoyable to watching them run after it as it rolls away too.

You just haven't been to the right strip club. :D

especially the penny...
gas stations would be distraught not being able to charge $3.99.9.. theyd have to finally get it over with and round off..

I have no great love for coins. They go home, get stuffed in a box and every 4-6 months I roll them and take them to the bank to get converted into REAL money (which comes in bills). If they get rid of the dollar bill, that's just going to mean more coins I have to roll on a regular basis because I do not care to have change jingling around in my pocket constantly. Additionally, vending machines are going to have to start taking $5 bills, or they're going to end up obsolete. It also means the machines will have to stock dollar coins for change.

Just like getting rid of the penny, getting rid of the dollar bill is an idea that is just not practical in our society.

When do you suppose they'll take up Sarkozy's too many foriegners position?
