    Michigan primary: Democratic mischief?

There seems to be a bit of confusion amongst Republicans about whether the critical Michigan primary Feb. 28 is open to independents and Democrats. A colleague called the Republican National Committee the other day and was told by a spokesman there that it was closed.

Then a longtime state GOP official said no, it ‘s “semi-closed.” That means it’s pretty much open.
And open it is. Some Liberal groups, the Daily KoS among them, are urging Democrats to sabotage the Republican primary in Michigan by voting for Rick Santorum.

Should this be legal? Is it unethical? Discussion?

I do not agree with open primaries for just this reason. It is a GOP primary which should be for members to vote for THEIR candidate. The same should hold true to the dems or any other party.

Unethical? Certainly. Illegal? I would guess not. But not my area of expertise.

That's about what I think. Let the Republicans pick their guy, and then he can try to convince me why he should be President.

I think it's an open question whether voting for Santorum qualifies as sabotage. To hear people around here, it seems that he might get the nod anyway.

It's done on both sides and is stupid, but it's not really something that you can guard against. Even if you make it a closed primary, I could switch my lean very easily the week before and then go in and vote for who ever and switch it back afterwards. It would be impossible to enforce laws mandating that you only vote for those that you honestly want to win. All in all, the number of people that actually listen like good little sheep and follow through with this stuff is so small that I can't imagine it making a difference in primaries where hundreds of thousands of people are voting. You might get a few hundred B.S. votes out of a few hundred thousand votes.

    A few thoughts from a non-Party-aligned conservative:

The two Parties have the right to make up whatever rules they like.

The National organizations probably have something to say about what rules the various State organizations make.

If the National and/or State organizations allow open primaries, I'm sure they have some good reason...at least what , in their minds, is a good reason.

If open primaries turn out to bite them in the ass, they have no one to blame but themselves.

    Why shouldn't it be legal?

    1) Primaries should be handled internally to begin with
    2) The rules of primaries are determined by the party (for the most part) not the state

Its not like Republicans didn't do the same thing. Only difference is it backfired on them

I opposed it 4 years ago when Rush was pushing people to do this, I oppose it now. Let republicans pick their nominee.
