- Colonel Paul YinglingNobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.
Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.
All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.
What's he supposed to say, "Look your Holy books were defaced, we took it into our own hands to burn them. Tough luck."In a letter sent to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Obama expressed his administration's "regret and apologies over the incident in which religious materials were unintentionally mishandled,"

We're in Afghanistan trying to stabilize the government we helped create, and winning the hearts and minds of everyday Afghans. If anything the soldiers should have made sure any evidence wasn't found.
I think Obama handled it well. Regardless of the outcome he did the right thing.

If...one American soldier comes home alive rather than dead...would this apology be acceptable?
If your answer is NO...I submit you are not worthy of being called an American!
Nonetheless, I think Gingrich is a windbag. There is nothing that this crook could say that would make me beleive him based upon his bad acts. "Newt Gingrich (R-GA), the Speaker of the House, was accused of financial improprieties leading to House reprimand and $300,000 in sanctions leading to his resignation (1997)"
Obama isn't the first to apologize when Americans **** up and won't be the last.
Presidential apologies, especially to other countries, don’t always come easily. President George W. Bush apologized for the abuse of Iraqis at Abu Ghraib prison and for a soldier who had used a Quran for target practice. He did the same to China over a spy plane incident. President Clinton also apologized to China for a bombing of their embassy in Belgrade.
