Iran has the ability to fire missiles at U.S. targets in the Middle East and "temporarily" close a key sea transit route, a senior intelligence official said Thursday.

Tehran has a missile arsenal capable of reaching "targets throughout the region and into Eastern Europe," Lt. Gen. Ronald Burgess, Defense Intelligence Agency director, told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"Iran has … threatened to launch missiles against the United States and our allies in the region in response to an attack" on its nuclear facilities or other targets, he said.

What's more, Iran "could also employ its terrorist surrogates worldwide," Burgess said. He also noted that "Iran can close the Strait of Hormuz," the key sea lane used to move oil and other goods to destinations around the globe. The U.S. intelligence community believes Iran "is unlikely to initiate or intentionally provoke a conflict or launch a preemptive attack," Burgess told the panel.

Obama had better be on top of this. Any attempt to intimidate Europe will be met with a bombing of Tehran. Close the Strait, and lose your navy. I suggest Obama bang his shoe on the podium, "We will bury you."

Translation... Iran may have the means to defend itself... maybe... possibly... perhaps...
Bet it was a riveting powerpoint.

It's not news that Iran has missiles that can hit Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Really it's not. They've been able to do that for a long, long time. In fact, I think Ronald Reagan sold them some of the technology.

Nah, that didn't work out so well for Kruschev. It seems Obama is content to give Iran enough rope to hang themselves with...Iran seems content to actually do it.

I wonder if Iran realizes that Western anti-missile tech is about 20 years ahead of Iranian missile tech...

That's how you want to react to simple intimidation, excuse me attempted intimidation. Doesn't that seem like a bit of an over reaction to you? And since the missiles aren't in Tehran I assume that bombing the city would result in them being fired by the Iranians, which would be the exact outcome we where trying to avoid in the first place by bombing them.

What, you don't like Teddy Roosevelt?

After all the lies we got from Bush, don't tell me that you are willing to believe the lies coming out of the Obama administration. Been there, done that, won't get fooled again.

I don't believe 'senior intelligence officials'.
Good intelligence officials lie to the public.
Bad intelligence officials get caught doing it.
Like when mossad says Venezuela is harvesting weapon grad uranium
and wikileaks intercepts CIA chatter that the CIA knows its a lie.

Nah, he didn't sell them the technologoy. He had Ollie North trade it to them so he could be a hero and get the hostages released.

Absolutely. Honestly, it makes no sense to build ICBMs when you can deliver via panel van. And for the price of a ICBM you could get multiple nukes. It makes absolutely no sense to deliver a nuke to America atop a missile.

A growing concern is the Latin America/Middle Eastern terrorist connection. They don't need to shoot rockets to accomplish their mission. Just gotta come through the border.

Iran has no capability of hitting Europe or the US.. but they can sure a h*ll bomb the oil facilities in easter Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar... Thos locations are oly 800 miles away.. and that would bring us to our knees.

The Saudi oil fields are certainly a target for Iranian retaliation, but they would have to get through this...(my bold)...

Royal Saudi Air Defence (Arabic: الدفاع الجوي الملكي السعودي) is the fourth branch of Saudi Armed Forces. It was a part of the Army until 1981, when it was made independent by Field Marshal Khalid bin Sultan. The RSADF has its headquarters in Riyadh, there is also here an elaborate underground command facility that co-ordinates Saudi Arabia's advanced "Peace Shield" radar and air defence system - reputed to be the most advanced radar network in the world.

The air defense forces, with an estimated 4,000 personnel in 1992, had as their primary responsibility the operation of thirty-three SAM batteries. Of these, sixteen batteries were equipped with 128 I-Hawk SAMs with a forty-kilometer range, which were emplaced around Riyadh, Ras Tanura, Dhahran, Jiddah, and key air bases at Khamis Mushayt, Hafar al Batin, and Tabuk, as well as the approaches to strategic oil facilities of the Eastern Province.

The remaining seventeen batteries, forming a second line of air defense, were equipped with sixty-eight Shahine SAM fire units with a range of sixteen kilometers. These SAMs were a version of the French Crotale missile system mounted on AMX-30SA chassis. This mobile missile defense guarded the Saudi oil fields and other vital installations. An additional seventy-three Shahine fire units were employed as static defense.

Both the IHawk and Shahine systems were linked to AWACS and to the Peace Shield command and control system. In addition to the missile defense, the air defense forces were equipped with Vulcan 20mm self-propelled guns and 30mm guns mounted on AMX-30SA chassis.

Yes... After Iraq I'm sure we should just bow down and go off this ONE intelligence report.
Sweet who cares if Iran can reach Europe. Are they going to do that? NO.

Quite true... yet its a dangerous situation.........

It is. That's why some of the first moves in any military action would include destroying Iran's SSMs. Once they're gone, Iran is virtually helpless to retaliate at range.

The western media is ramping up to manufacture consent for invading Iran. I hope people are not so stupid that they believe this crap. Iran is an industrial power and they have every right to pursue nuclear energy if they want.

Enough of this neo-con, war hawk, interventionist BS.

Who ever said Iran cannot have nuclear energy? No one has said this.
