Talk about Planet of the Apes!

(AP) – "Seven central Florida teenagers were arrested after authorities said they punched and kicked a 13-year-old until she was unconscious while on a school bus. The victim told authorities that yesterday was her first time riding the bus and no one would let her sit down. About 75 children were riding the bus bound for a middle school in Ocala, a rural city north of Orlando."

Disgusting . . . school bus bullying and violence is escalating while in-school bullying and violence is under 'attempted quelching'

We've had countless issues with the kids and buses - they know there's no one watching and little can and will be done to stop their behavior. . . and bus drivers rarely manage to keep things under control.

Would they consider hiring assistance on each bus?

Hell no - they don't care that much about the safety of our kids.

Sickening. But I am not surprised.

The bus driver is an idiot and should be fined for accessory to attempted murder. What else could it be called?

Yeah - I've yet to hear of any bus driving having called the COPS when children are behaving violently.

That's what you're suppose to do when someone's being attacked - either step in and STOP it or CALL the cops immediately - this whole 'keep driving' is stupid but their only reaction from all the many cases we've heard.

You know - if they started and stopped then didn't he check on her - bring her up front - or something at least?

Bull****! If it were my child on the bus, I'd be all over school district officials like white on rice. School systems have the responsibility of protecting the health and safety of children from the moment they step on a school bus until the moment they steep off at home once again. They'd have to call out the National Guard to get me off of the school district.

WHY did the bus driver not pull over and call 911? Why did he or she not do that? Oh, no, no, no. Heads would ****ing roll if that were my child!

They don't care - when some kids were picking on my son I tried to make calls (like they tell you to do) to report it - I ended up having ot go to the principle and in person because everyone 'responsible' for these kids via the transportation department aren't available, concerned or remotely aware.

But yet my kid's district always stresses that it's not a 'right' to ride the bus - it's a 'priviledge' . .. the only time a priviledge can get you killed for needing ot take advantage of it.

Adults cannot touch children and apparently most children know that these days. It would be a good idea to have an adult on each bus but as soon as the kids determined that the adult have no real power it wouldn't matter.

Well obviously that would have to change.

We experienced a bad bus situation where my daughter had her hair pulled and cut from people in the seat behind her. We reported it and talked to the principal. She said that she could discipline the children that did it, however, knowing the children involved they would retaliate against my daughter. The principal asked if knowing that we'd like to go forward. I said, "No, I want her assigned to ####, another school." Fortunately we didn't have a problem getting the transfer approved and new school was a lot closer.

I was always asked why I would not let my child take the bus. Why I would take the time to drive my child to school and be there for pick up when it would have easier on me to have the bus do the work. My child would ask me to allow the bus to be taken. My answer has always been NO. The drivers cannot do the job as the teachers and definitely not the parent, some are not capable, some do not care to.

The lessons learned, the beatings and the nonsense on the bus during the unstructured time where my kid would be subjected to this is something I keep at bay.

I would like to know exactly what the bus driver was doing when this beating took place.

In addition, I would tell you that I'm tired of that crap. Good and well raised children, regardless of family income, do NOT trump thug behavior. Bad kids do not become good kids by attending school with well behaved children. It doesn't work that way.

I am to the point where I believe that private schools funded by vouchers are the only way. If your kid ****s up enough and gets the boot, adios. That means my children have the opportunity to attend schools where learning might actually take place. Base enrollment on continued favorable behavior, that is equality.

I see anger towards the bus driver and school administrators. Where is the outrage towards the parents of the kids that did the beating?
Yes, the school system needs to provide a safe environment for our kids. Having good kids starts at home and finishes at home. Schools would have less problems if some parents did their job in raising kids.

Scum will be scum. Expecting scum to behave like good people is a painful way to go through life-- and an irresponsible basis for public policy. We need to make policy decisions based on the reality that some people are scum and are always going to be scum, and thus that our policies need to take scum into account.

I have to agree that parents need to be taken to task. Violent children come from violent households, whether the violence at home is physical or more mental. Where did these kids learn it was acceptable to beat someone into unconsciousness?

I just imagine that poor girl... her first day on the bus. As if that isn't intimidating enough for some children, but to have the life nearly beaten out of you for no good reason. What a frightening introduction. To people who say "kids will be kids" and bullying is a normal part of growing up, will you please acknowledge some of the extremes that are happening in today's world? This is not simple rivalry - it's blood lust and a passion for inflicting horrible suffering on others. This behavior needs IMMEDIATE correction.

Kids who do these kinds of things need an early introduction to the law, or, in an ideal world, there would be special schools setup to send all of these problem children so that they can get the kinks ironed out - including getting their parents involved in the process, since they are obviously a root of this issue.

Such a sad story, this one.

It has to be the bus driver's fault. I mean, these kids need our help. They're obviously from families that need our help, too. I think the federal government would be wise to collect more money from its citizens (the ones who don't need so much help) in order to have better paid and better trained personnel.

I mean, we can't let school personnel have any power. And, we can't tell the parents to discipline their kids or keep them at home. But, if we pay enough money towards education, it will get better, right? Maybe we could pick kids up individually?

Income level has nothing to do with obedience. Entitlement has everything to do with disobedience. Kids who understand that their behavior has consequences behave.

What? are you being sarcastic?
The only thing I agree on is the kids and family need help or something. IMO, govt may be part of the solution. The real solution starts at home with the parents.
As someone else said sometimes people will be scum no matter what we do.

The parents are not being absolved of their responsibility here, nevertheless, the bus driver was on the scene. The driver has a duty to insure the safe operation of the bus. The school administration has a duty to hire properly and insure a safe environment for the students. If the gang of kids who did the beating were known to the administration then the administration was required to act in a manner that would have prevented this situation. That means getting the parents involved as well.

If it were my kid I wouldn't even bother with the school district.

I would find out where these punks lived and give it to them worse.

But I don't think I could stop myself at putting them unconscious.

Hopefully those teenagers serve the maximum sentence.Hopefully with the video there should be enough sufficient evidence that the prosecution does not need to do a plea bargain with any of the accused.

We can't tell from the video what kind of traffic the driver was in and whether he had to find a safe place to stop. Maybe the chool district needs to provide some "retraining" of all its drivers.

I hope that the participants in this beating spend time in "juvie" and have hundreds of hours of community service assigned to them. I hope their parents are mortified. If my kids had been part of something like this, the least of their problems would've been their criminal charges.

BTW, my kids rode a school bus for just three days in elementary school. On the first day my second grader was beaten up, and on the third, a middle-schooler who was picked up on the way held a drill bit from his shop class to my kid's throat. I went screaming up to the bus barn and talked to the guy in charge, who said all the right things--that an investigation would be launched, and blah, blah, blah.

I drove my kids to their schools every morning and picked them up every afternoon after that, no matter what.

The driver pulled over, stopped and broke up the fight.. but as soon as he/she started driving again.. the beating began again.. Driver stated he knew he couldn't control the situation and so drove to a place of safety and assistance.

Little story about when I was a kid. I was 11 and I was having some bullying troubles on the bus. Nothing I couldnt habdle but I knew that if I was dealing with 5 or 6 kids I would not be winning that sort of problem. So I picked out the guy that I knew was pretty much the ringleader and told him when we get off this bus, Im going to stomp your ass, just you and me...I dont care if I have to walk 20 blocks to get home, you are not going to give me **** all day and get away with it.

So we get into it, hes bigger than me, longer reach and stronger, but hes a clumsy bastard so I got inside on him after taking a few hits and pummeled the hell out of him after I got inside his reach. At this point we are both getting pretty tore up and an adult comes running over and asks who started it. The bigger guy looks at me and points at me and says I did.

I look at the adult and I say damn right I did, this guy and 5 of his buddies were bullying me on the bus, all Im doing is standing up for myself. The guy told the bigger kid to get his ass home and then made sure I was alright. It was the bigger kid's father, who thanked me for teaching his son that a lesson in respect puntuated by a black eye tends to stick better than one punctuated with a period.

No one ever gave me **** after that, because it wasnt worth getting bloodied up over. Which I had shown I was determined to do if I was given crap by anyone. Most of those kids actually became friends later and learned that bullying someone wasnt worth it and pushes people away that could be good friends. Im not saying thats how everyone should deal with it, but if it happened more often bullies would not grow so brazen in their attempts.

A bully will skip lunch to bully you again, if he/she isn't stopped.
