40 killed in clashes after Egypt soccer match

Published February 01, 2012

| Associated Press

CAIRO – At least 40 Egyptians were killed Wednesday in violence following a soccer match in Port Said, when fans flooded the field seconds after a match against a rival team was over, Egypt's Health ministry said.

It was one of the worst incidents of sports violence in Egypt in decades.

A security official and a medic said fans of the home team, Al-Masry, swarmed the field after a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, Egypt's top team. They threw stones, fireworks, and bottles at the fans and injured some players.

A medic at a morgue in Port Said, a city on the Mediterranean coast, said some of the dead were security officers. He was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

The causes of the deaths were not immediately known.

The ministry's statement about 40 dead was carried on state TV.

The players were later taken to the locker room for protection, Sayed Hamdi, a player told state TV.

Soon after the violence, a soccer game in the Cairo Stadium between the Al-Ismailiya and Zamalek teams was called off in mourning for the violence in Port Said.

State TV showed video of sections of the Cairo stadium on fire. The announcer said angry fans of the Zamalek protested the cancellation and set some sections of the stadium on fire.
This sport is crazy in some parts of the World.

(could this get moved to the mainstream news also, sorry wrong section)

The latest say at least 68 killed.

73 dead and counting....

No need of a nuclear bomb in the Middle East. They have soccer!

Unbelievable!

Such a refined, civilized grade of people over there. Is there anything that doesn't get them juiced up to kill people?

So what, let them be. :2bow:
It's amazing how the media makes things look spooky. :?

It's all political. Former ousted president Mubarak used soccer to boost his popularity.

I wonder if you have the same opinion of our civilization. Turn on your television. Kids killing their classmates over bullying. People who get cheated on going on shooting sprees. Got fired? Time to shoot up people. Actually, don't turn on your television. The brightness of the screen may blind you and ruin the decor of that little room your mind lives in.

Great point. Our country is no better. Just saw a story today about a woman who offered sexual favors from herself and her teenage daughter, at the same time, in return for a pawn shop owner to waive their $25 monthly payment on a lap top. The daughters comment when her mom said it? "No, not me this time mom. This is just you." The tone in which she said it is so horrifying too. She said it as though she just had something better to do at that moment, not like she thought it was wrong. Sickening.

I think the bottom line is that no country really has cornered the market on their people doing ****ed up ****.

Concur fully. Well, maybe Thailand. They have a lot of he-she's.:2sick1:

Sounds like you should lay off soccer for a while...

70 odd people killed at a soccer game is pretty terrible. I agree.

This is the comment i have a problem with which you "liked". The insinuation that the number of people killed at this soccer ground would compare to the number of people killed in a nuclear attack is ridiculous.

You seem to miss the blindingly obvious fact that this comment wasn't supposed to be taken literally. Can't understand anybody falling into such obvious trap...

I interpreted the comment to underscore the instability in the area; more allegory than literal.

You're right. I temporarily forgot about the OWS crowd and our liberals in general. My bad.

This has nothing to do with the football. It has everything to do with the political reality of Egypt and the tribal systems that have been transported into the fanbase of sports teams.

Violence between fans, players and fans and players is not that uncommon in most sports. Deaths on the other hand is rare, but we are talking about the biggest sport on the planet. Sure 50+ people died at a sport stadium, but considering that millions went to stadiums world wide yesterday alone then frankly it is a one off. More people die going to and from the sports arena than are killed at sport arenas.

They used to just call it the 'English disease' until most parts of the world, especially European fans, got a taste and started to enjoy violence as a pass time.

Interesting how you know it'll be a 'one off'.

the hooligan movement in the 70;s and especially 80's was ver political as well, people frustrated with the economy, the police, thatcher and then would go out on the weekend and vent their anger!

At least half the dead were crushed in the stampede for the exits. That can happen in any crowd. There's a long history of rivalry and violence between this set of fans. The talk today seems to surround the home fans, who had strongly supported the revolution, claiming that remnants of the Mubarak regime had used the event to settle scores. Mubarak may be gone, but the Army who supported his reign is still in power, and they control the police who seemed half-hearted in their attempts to contain the riot.
My impression of American sport is that it's a more sanitised experience overall, but by and large, due to the distances between franchises, you don't get large groups of opposing supporters following their team to away matches, so the opportunity for clashes is near non-existent.
