This just in - the USS Abraham Lincoln passed through the Straits of Hormuz and was not - repeat not - sunk by the valiant Iranian Navy in spite of threats to the contrary. Can't we count on anything any more?

Sure you can count on things. You can count on Iran to make a lot of noise about their military, but fail to back it up. They're perfectly reliable.

Did Iran say that they would sink the ship if had merely gone through the strait ?

The way Iran sees it, if they go to war against us and try to **** with the entire world's oil supply, pretty much everyone is willing to start bombing the living **** out of them. Nobody wants a gas hike in the middle of a global recession.

Which is what makes their claim to close the strait amusing. That will go worse for Iran than anyone else.

the threat was that any sanctions that would prevent Iran from exporting oil would lead to a blocking of this passage way.

No such sanctions have been placed (yet).

From a strictly military point of view, these are the conditions to watch for in the next few months:

1. The US Naval Task Force in the Persian Gulf departs for the open waters of the Arabian sea.

2. A minimum of three CVN's joined as a single entity.

Then and only then will the situation be serious.

Iran rhetoric aside, this just proves they are not the suicidal country that people think they are. This is the same reason why Iran having a nuke would be no big deal for them in the long run.

If Iran's leaders were truly suicidal and wanted martyrdom (as some conservatives have suggested), they would have attacked the Navy vessel.

They didn't attack because they don't have the capability to do so. Soon, they just might. With a arsenal of 10 or more nukes, they would have that capability. Those they will have sooner than you might think.

Again, what does that matter to a martyrdor? They all want to fight the white devil and go to Allah according conservatives such as yourself (the independent lean doesn't fool anyone).
