This is almost certainly the result of a quickly-assembled DDoS attack—and easily the widest in scope and ferocity we've seen in some time. If you had any doubts Anonymous is still a hacker wrecking ball, doubt no more.

Apparently a website called Megaupload was taken down by the FBI, it's founder including 4 of the websites members were arrested, and some internet denzines did not take too kindly to it. The hacker Anonymous seems to be taking this one personally.

Anonymous has posted a response to these happenings, and apparently Chris Dodd is squarely in their sites:

    2. Popular file-sharing website megaupload.com gets shutdown by U.S Justice - FBI and charged its founder with violating piracy laws. Four Megaupload members were also arrested. The FBI released a press release on its website which you can view here:

    4. We Anonymous are launching our largest attack ever on government and music industry sites. Lulz. The FBI didn't think they would get away with this did they? They should have expected us.

    It's terrorism. End of story.

    Agreed.

Sadly I believe its actions such as theirs that will ultimately push our government to strangle internet freedom. They are threatening the very thing they claim to protect.

The story doesn't end though as it isn't being questioned here - that and the actions are part of a bigger set of complicated issues.

So how does one protest in the wild wild west of the internet? Isn't this akin to protesters laying the the street and blocking traffic?

This is private citizens stepping up to defend innocent people being wrongfully attacked by the government. This takedown of megaupload is an egregious and illegal overreach by the government. But it's not okay that left leaning hackers and anarchists are the ones defending our civil liberties, right?

I find the attack amusing, although I don't know what it will accomplish in the long-term.

It shows our government technology is not that strong. Unfortunately, Anonymous is going to have to do a lot more than take down a few web pages to gain fame.

If SOPA passes I think there will be outright cyber warfare.

This is all not rocket science. This is what you get when you have a world wide computer network. Digitalized information that can be freely exchanged to anybody.

It can be both. I would describe it as criminal activity done as civil disobedience, with the emphasis being on the criminal activity part.

Hundreds of sites showed how to do it yesterday.

I support most of what 'Anonymous' does. They want to change the world by making examples of things in society that have clearly gone wrong.
