Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music All Offline

Anonymous has sure been quiet lately, but today's federal bust of Megaupload riled 'em up good: a retaliatory strike against DoJ.gov (and plenty of other foes) leaving them completely dead. DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com is reporting the department's site as universally nuked, and an Anonymous-affiliated Twitter account is boasting success. This is almost certainly the result of a quickly-assembled DDoS attack—and easily the widest in scope and ferocity we've seen in some time. If you had any doubts Anonymous is still a hacker wrecking ball, doubt no more.

Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music All Offline

Apparently a website called Megaupload was taken down by the FBI, it's founder including 4 of the websites members were arrested, and some internet denzines did not take too kindly to it. The hacker Anonymous seems to be taking this one personally.

Anonymous has posted a response to these happenings, and apparently Chris Dodd is squarely in their sites:

From Anonymous said:
  1. January 19th, 2012
  2. Popular file-sharing website megaupload.com gets shutdown by U.S Justice - FBI and charged its founder with violating piracy laws. Four Megaupload members were also arrested. The FBI released a press release on its website which you can view here:
  3. FBI — Justice Department Charges Leaders of Megaupload with Widespread Online Copyright Infringement
  4. We Anonymous are launching our largest attack ever on government and music industry sites. Lulz. The FBI didn't think they would get away with this did they? They should have expected us.

It's terrorism. End of story.

Agreed.

Sadly I believe its actions such as theirs that will ultimately push our government to strangle internet freedom. They are threatening the very thing they claim to protect.

The story doesn't end though as it isn't being questioned here - that and the actions are part of a bigger set of complicated issues.

So how does one protest in the wild wild west of the internet? Isn't this akin to protesters laying the the street and blocking traffic?

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

This is private citizens stepping up to defend innocent people being wrongfully attacked by the government. This takedown of megaupload is an egregious and illegal overreach by the government. But it's not okay that left leaning hackers and anarchists are the ones defending our civil liberties, right?

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

I find the attack amusing, although I don't know what it will accomplish in the long-term.

It shows our government technology is not that strong. Unfortunately, Anonymous is going to have to do a lot more than take down a few web pages to gain fame.

If SOPA passes I think there will be outright cyber warfare.

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

This is all not rocket science. This is what you get when you have a world wide computer network. Digitalized information that can be freely exchanged to anybody.

You can't eat cake all day and not get fat.

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

Is this civil disobedience or illegal activity?

It can be both. I would describe it as criminal activity done as civil disobedience, with the emphasis being on the criminal activity part.

So how does one protest in the wild wild west of the internet? Isn't this akin to protesters laying the the street and blocking traffic?

Hundreds of sites showed how to do it yesterday.

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

I support most of what 'Anonymous' does. They want to change the world by making examples of things in society that have clearly gone wrong.

I think one of the things that has gone wrong is the idea that vigilante justice and acting like assholes on the internet is a good thing.

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

Anonymous is just doing what any corporation would do; protecting their assets.

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

We'll see if it worked though. Our government has the tendency to listen more to money and industry than it does the voices of the people.

But I will happily eat my words if SOPA gets shot down.

So the answer is "Yes, it is like laying in the street and blocking traffic" but you're uncomfortable saying so? Laying in the street is illegal as well ... but it's not criminal.

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

It's terrorism. End of story.

This word has been thrown around so damn much lately that, like the word "racist", it is starting to lose actual meaning.

You can get arrested for laying in the streets how is that not criminal?

I think shutting down your sites like Wikipedia, et al. did is the Internet version of 'blocking traffic'.

In theory, I don't support taking down sites that don't belong to you. But in light of the BS that SOPA and PIPA are, I don't really care. Anonymous usually targets people who don't deserve any sympathy, so I can't say too much about this.

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

Anonymous is a group full of punkass kids who think themselves as internet vigilantes. I've repepated this over and over, they're using the most basic and primitive forms of hacking, DDos. Denial of Distribution of Service. It's the kind that amateur Chinese hackers and the North Korean cyber terror unit use. It's a joke

I draw a somewhat gray line between getting arrested for civil disobedience and getting arrested for say assault & battery. I do not see civil disobedience as being a "criminal act" even though, per the definition of the word it is. That said, it's still illegal.

Did Anonymous ever release that stuff on the Mexican cartel?

Re: Anonymous Goes on Megaupload Revenge Spree: DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, and Universal Music

Very dumb move by "Anonymous". What people fail to realize is that if the Internet cannot find some sort of governance, then I get the feeling it's going to start to shrink. It will go from being the World-Wide Web to being a much less open community, by law and regulation. It's just that simple. I have no use for online piracy, or these hackers who think they can do whatever they damn well please. If SOPA doesn't pass, you may well see some of these companies no longer allowing their intellectual property to be displayed online at all.

No idea. Truth is I never heard of Anonymous until this story came out yesterday on Drudge.:3oops:

I agree. What this is amounts to a spit wad being shot at a heavily armored tank.Barely even an annoyance. Perhaps Anonymous should change their name to Annoyance.
