Wiki said they would shut down for 24 hours to protest possible legislation that would harm the free internet. I was reading something on wiki and went to click on a link on the site and it comes up to a page that says:

Imagine a World
Without Free Knowledge
For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia. Learn more.

And that is it. It is shut down. It happened while I was reading it! LOL

O great! The day I have a lab report to work on. Congress ruins everything! :p

If you really need wiki, you can still see the pages. Simply hit stop immediately after you load it. I have still been doing research on my posts tonight.

I LOVE the message and movement, though.

All I am saying is that if the internet dies, we lose the porn. BIG DEAL.

I'll have to go to a library or a premier database and get better, more reliable source material? Well, ****, this sucks.

Wrote the following letter to my Senators, and will write it to my Representative as soon as I can get his website to load:

My name is Viktyr L. Korimir. I became your constituent in November of 2011 when I moved to Ukiah from my previous residence in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

I am writing this letter to you today because of the threat to my civil rights and livelihood represented by the SOPA and PIPA bills that are currenly being discussed in Congress. As a professional writer in a niche publishing industry, I understand the importance of preventing piracy as much as anyone, but these bills under discussion would destroy my entire way of life.

I do the majority of my business over the Internet. I write content for websites about the roleplaying games industry-- one of the industries hardest hit by Internet piracy-- and I sell my material on the Internet and I promote my material on the Internet. The Internet is where my customers meet to use, discuss, and enjoy my material.

If these bills pass, the legitimate and law-abiding websites upon which my entire career rests will not be able to operate. Websites which rely on user-generated content cannot afford to monitor every third party that uses their services, and the capacity for spurious or even downright malicious accusations to force them to shut down means that many will not be able to afford to operate at all. I am a creative professional, the very kind of person that copyright laws were written to protect, and these bills if made law will destroy my career and the majority of my entire industry.

As an American citizen and a resident of your State, I implore you do the right thing here. I'm asking you to protect the Internet, protect free speech, and protect *me* from legislation that will destroy my way of life.

Your fellow American,

VLK

Alright, good on the big providers, but seriously, I hope the idiots that put their facebook/youtube/twitter, etc. accounts as "black out" will remove their accounts, because they know damn well their hosting service will not be on the list, and if they are on the list of a huge advertisement, I'm sure 15 heartbroken twitter followers will be crying.

I'm really glad that blackouts are happening in protest.

Now I just pray congress does the right thing and tosses this POS out the window.

The most important Congressional issue is the state of their campaign war-chest.

That always gets their undivided attention.

Start putting the hurt on that.

But they won't know who to invade if they can't look up countries on Wikipedia.

That's why I've been vandalizing the Wikipedia pages for Elbonia, Latveria, and Narnia every chance I get to include lurid descriptions of their WMD programs and human rights abuses.

The Internet's dying is the biggest of deals. It saves researchers thousands of work-hours that once were spent in libraries.

Easy way to bypass the blackout. Click the "ESC" key just as the page starts loading.

You dirty pirate sympathist/supporter. You best hide when the drones start targeting American "pirates". /sarcasm

See you in Guantanimo? /double sarcasm

Your letter is very eloquent. Much more than the "If you support this bill then you are a evil girly man." letter I sent to Schwarzenegger a few years back.

Just found this on my favorite games forums.

GOOD. Wikipedia is NOT a legitimate information source for most important things so far as I'm concerned. Now maybe someone will actually have to go to a LIBRARY and pick up a BOOK or go somewhere that has actually been researched and fact-checked in order to get their information for the next 24 hours.

It's a great place to start about any knowledge.
