In my home state, yes. We call that "lynching" (more than 1 on 1) and it is considered deadly force, so deadly force is a justified response.

In Chicago? I don't know, Chicago is very anti-gun and not self-defense friendly.

Aww, come on. We aren't that bad. If he'd blown a few asses away, he'd'a been just fine. Right after they threw him in jail for carrying a concealed weapon.

Send them to jail. As a libertarian, I've never felt more in support of hate crime laws in my life. Though I don't necessarily support the idea behind hate crime legislation because I'm worried it may come with unintended consequences, I do find the idea of mandatory prison sentences very appealing in this case.

I do not support hate crime laws. What I support is punishing those with the maximum penalty for assault and attempted murder.I could care less if the offenders are in their teens,twenties, thirties or what ever. The fact the offenders may be minors doesn't change the fact they committed a violent crime and as such should be punished like anyone else who commits a violent crime.

They should be sent to jail and very possibly tried as adults for felony aggravated assault. Obviously they can not be allowed to attend public school again. They also should be banned from future service in the military.

I also believe in what goes around should come around. Their pictures and names should be posted online, in the local newspaper and local news television. See what comes of it.

Moreover, as i said before, there's no evidence that this was a "hate crime" in the traditional sense of the phrase. It was just a bunch of teenagers who thought they were the ****.

If he had a gun there are two likely outcomes. First, it never would have happened. Second, one of them would have taken his gun and shot him with it.
Otherwise, whether it would be legal would be how long he kept shooting and if he kept shooting other ones in the back as they fled.

I never find humor about prison rape humorous. If the government takes someone into custody and essentially eliminating all rights to self defense and security, the government has a strict duty to keep that prisoner safe. Being raped and assaulted is never part of the sentencing and there is no situation where I find sexual assault humorous or tolerable.

I completely agree. Oh, not the part about making jokes, 'cause, heck, we make jokes about Helen Keller. But I most assuredly agree that our prison system is completely/totally broken as evidenced by these rapes and assaults. Just. Plain. Wrong.

What I find boldly pathetic is the same people that say rape in prison isn't right are usually the same people that do nothing about it. No letters, no protests, nothing. Prison is KNOWN for this sort of thing happening. How many people complaining have actually done something besides get self-righteous on an internet chat board to do something about it?

I can see why they needed five guys to do this...they can't punch worth a sh!t. What a bunch of ******s, and complete morons for having one dudes total face on camera. He'll roll over, because they're ******s and they'll all be arrested. With clear video evidence, no less.

Furthermore, the whole "racial" epitaph things is misunderstood. I know dudes like this, white boys dropping "nugguh" because that's what 50 Cent and Lil B say in their songs. They're fronting as thugs to sound tough and intimidate the poor guy getting beat. I doubt it's really a "racist" thing, the n-bombs.

Overly pessimistic. If taking guns away from people was so simple, there would be far far fewer shootings.


People getting their guns taken away rarely happens IRL unless they drop it or wave it around but won't fire it.

The main exception is if someone is already grappling you. In that case, tactically pulling a gun is contra-indicated; it is needful to escape the grapple first. A knife is much handier in that instance.

They're apparently all Asian, so racial motives seem improbable... though national identity/linguistic-group could possibly have played a role.

In any case I oppose hate crimes laws. Violence is violence, and this sort of thing is "hateful" period regardless of motive. They should be punished severely, for aggravated assault and battery and lynching.

Not to get caught up in racial indentity BS, but they seem white to me. The one dude who's face was clearly visible seemed like every college kid where I live-- whiter than the day is long.

But it really doesn't matter. I agree, hate crime legislation is BS even in this case. Would this assault be any less disgusting, despicable and criminal if it wasn't a racist attack? This is very bad no matter "why" it happened. I'm pretty sure all crimes like this are "hateful".

I'd love to see how they fare in a Chicago prison. P Stones and Vice Lords are hardcore, these punks will be currency in prison. Especially with fighting skills as poor as that.
 
Not that I excuse the beating (I don't and think it was wrong), but I do have to wonder. When in the hell will people learn not to video tape themselves doing illegal things? It's about as stupid as trying to run away from the cops with no belt and your pants hanging down below your ass.
 
My mistake, apparently the attackers were white.

I agree. I'm not at all a fan of "hate crime" laws. Crimes are crimes, and they aren't committed with love. It just muddles up the situation and is a politically correct solution to a law enforcement problem.

There's no need to call it a hate crime. It's already a crime. Aggravated battery (which it certainly looks like to me) carries a prison sentence of up to 5 years in Illinois. Hopefully all six of them get the maximum sentence. Hell, if I was the prosecutor, I'd press for attempted murder.

Bingo. A person's motivation is irrelevant, and why "hate crimes" are completely unnecessary. The crime is the crime. Period.
 
Good thing Illinois is still one of the last bastions for the opposition of citizen's rights and personal defense. It is clear that, due to these restrictions, vicious criminals throughout the state are being cowed into law abiding behavior and cities like Chicago are well on their way to being Utopian metropolises of love and harmony.
