There’s off message and then there’s Mitt Romney’s son, Matt Romney, who suggested on Thursday that President Obama should release his birth certificate and grades before his father releases his tax returns.
“He’s certainly not afraid of anything, he’s not hiding anything,” he said of his father in a video recorded by a Patch reporter in New Hampshire. “But I heard someone suggest the other day that as soon as President Obama releases his grades and birth certificate and sort of a long list of things, that maybe he’d do that.”

Mitt Romney’s Son: Obama Should Release Birth Certificate, Grades | TPM2012

Romney's son is a birther. How about that?

From the AP story readily available from a multitude of sources:
One of Mitt Romney's sons has an answer for those who say his father should release his tax returns. He jokes that President Barack Obama should go first and release his birth certificate and other records.

Matt Romney's wisecrack came before an audience in New Hampshire on Friday.

In response on Twitter, the Obama campaign tweeted, in part, "Guess he doesn't have one of our mugs?"

The Obama campaign sells mugs with a picture of Obama's birth certificate
Doesn't sound like the kid is a birther, just a smack-mouthed youngster.

Oh yeah. You have to love the "Oh, I was just kidding!" excuse. As if he didn't know precisely what he was doing? really?

He isn't really a youngster, he's 40 years old -- but he's definitely a smart-ass. I like smart-asses. :D
40 yo is a youngster to me - most of my kids are over 40....

I'm no fan of Romney, but I am also no fan trying to make something said in jest a major gaffe. If you watch the video it is obvious the guy is kidding around.

Typical crap out of the mouth of one of the priviledged children of Romney.

It is interesting that Romney and his 5 sons have never served one day in the military. I don't believe it is necessary for everyone to be in the military and not everyone is suited for it.

But I know in my own family I have served and one of my two sons has served in Army. Just find it amazing that out of six of them not one of these bluebloods ever felt the urge to serve.
Of course they knew that some other " lesser family " would take the burden of defending their country while they played golf at the country club.

Typical crap? This is the first time I've heard anything about any one of his children.

So you acknowledge that military service isn't for everybody ... and then rag on Romney and his kids for not serving?

Jesus.

For the whole list of reasons of why not to vote for Romney, I'll add having such a lack of imagination as to have a name called Mitt Romney and call your son Matt Romney...

Just find it odd that out of 6 males not one has served. In my own immediate family 2 out of 3 have served. If I went out to include all uncles and cousins I would say at least 50% have served.

so you voted for the war hero in 2008 rather than the ticket that did not have ONE DAY of any kind of military service between its presidential candidate and its VP candidate?

Not at all, especially with the moron from Alaska as his VP.

Just a noteworthy fact is that McCain served as well did 3 of his 4 sons in the military.
Obama did not serve but his maternal grandfather served in the US Army and his paternal grandfather served for the British Army in Burma.

It seems like almost every American family has at least one member of each generaton who served in the military. I would not expect every male member of a family to serve but you would think there would be percentage of the able bodied male members to serve. Most American families have had at one generation or another members who served and been injured or killed in war as is the case for my family. It is the price we all pay so that our families live in peace in the USA.

Show me one Romney who has ever served his country.

Mitt Romney has done far more for this country than most people. there are lots of ways to "serve"

Depends on how you define family. Of the 20 or so cousins of my generation on my father's side, only one of us has served.

Show me one Romney who has ever served his country.

What the hell does it matter if any of them have?

I agree with you that there are many ways to serve ones nation.

Could you clarify for us what in Mitt Romeny's personal history you were referring to when you said he has done more for his country than most people?

I appreciated what McCain went through. But his voting record on veteran's issues is abysmal. Shameful in my view. Hard to figure.

So wait a minute robots can have kids? This is breaking news.

Actually I wished nobody's son or daughter was in uniform. When in uniform you are hoping they make it back home safely. You know there are always going to be casualties in the military but you are really hoping it isn't your kin. Which makes you feel selfish as you are basically saying let that casualty be someone else's kid.
In a perfect world we could have families like the Romneys and never having to see their son wear the uniform.

Fun fact...I do not have a birth certificate...never have had. I have a certificate of live birth issued from the great state of California (standard issue for children born on military bases in the 60s). I joined the military, got married, have had multiple drivers licenses and concealed carry licenses, went to multiple colleges...all using the same certificate. BTW...notice the title...Certificate of Live Birth...precisely the same as that presented by Obama recently. Unfortunately, Homeland security NOW says that in order for the DMV to authorize a license renewal (yes...they have already given me one in the past and accepted my verification) I must show an 'actual' birth certificate (In other words...the same legal document presented by Obama to show his birthplace may qualify him to be president, but it wont qualify me to renew a drivers license). It gets better...in order for me to get a birth certificate from the great state of California I have to go to my DMV, have them notorize an application using my OLD drivers license and certificate of live birth (which they WILL accept for notary purposes but will NOT accept for issuance of a drivers license), send it to California, have them send me a 'real' birth certificate, then go back to my DMV with my NEW birthcertificate, at which point they will issue me said new ID.

And if I checked yes in box 20, I could declare myself indigent with no address or an undocumented alien, and be issued a legal drivers license.

You still haven't squared up how you can take issue with neither Romney nor any of his 5 kids serving, while simultaneously saying not everybody needs to or can serve. Given the fact that your last response wasn't actually a response to what I said, I won't hold my breath.

He has created wealth for some, has provided jobs for others, and did a bang up job running the Olympic Games

That did a lot for the nation-far more than most

The fact that the Romneys don't serve in the military confirms the long tradition of the rich elite keeping their young from harms way while other young men are deemed expendable.
This goes back to the days of the college deferments which allowed the upper class an avenue to avoid the draft. It was felt that a young man working construction or farming was far more expendable than the young man studying sociology in college.
Oh but am certain the apologists will want to point out that the Romneys have served their country too. And am certain the Romneys have sacrificed much as the parents of Vietnam Veterans.

Yeah...the tweet was CYA...
