In John Heilemann's cover story "2012=1968?
," he wonders whether Occupy Wall Street protesters will do to Charlotte's Democratic National Convention in the summer of 2012 what demonstrators did to the Chicago DNC in 1968. The North Carolina city, sometimes called the "Wall Street of the South," is not taking any chances, and is already working to
pass an ordinance
that would make occupying downtown spaces with tents a "public nuisance," in addition to banning "noxious substances," padlocks, and other camping equipment. The fact that it would knock out the city's current overnight demonstrators is an added bonus.
Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx said dubiously last month that the rule, which could be enacted in January, is not aimed at a specific group. "Unlike many cities that have well-developed regulations governing protest activity, our local regulations contain gaps that need to be filled," he said. But a memo about the ordinance does note, "The recent issues related to camping on city property have further amplified the need to review whether the city wants to regulate this activity during the DNC." A city councilman added of the current Occupy Charlotte faction, "Once those ordinances go into effect, those overnight stays will end."

The MONSTER the Dems created, cannot be contained, this should be FUN to watch the people Obama and Co. say they support, making the DNC convention into a circus.

Just a reminder when all of this started that I noted that it was something that Obama was not going to used to his advantage.

Well at the DNC, protesters are confined to cages miles from the site anyway; so it's not like there will be much of a difference. And maybe they'll learn from the RNC last time and go pre-arrest people they suppose to be trouble makers.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. My city. :(

Charlotte is a beautiful city. The DNC will be glad they came.

Fitting for many...thats a good start.

Sweet. More asshats I will have to deal with when I am volunteering.

Yup, nothing like caging freedom. Woot!
As long as there are morons that dont get that you dont have the constitutional right to do whatever, wherever, then hell yes...a cage is a good place for them. Follow the rules...follow the laws...protest to your hearts content.

Freedom...you keep saying this word...I do not think it means what you think it means.

One of the most controversial "counter-terrorism" measures was the declaration of a designated free speech zone for protesters, limiting where and when protesters could exercise their first amendment rights. Protesters through the American Civil Liberties Union mounted an unsuccessful lawsuit for the right to protest outside of the designated free speech zone, which the group claimed was unconstitutional. FleetCenter access promulgated tight security measures that frustrated even the news media. Credentials enabling reporters to enter and exit the meeting became the subject of strict rules forbidding the act of borrowing and sharing such passes, a common practice for the major media outlets in the past.

Its only protected under the constitution unless i like it! Other than that is just ****ing annoying and just wrong.. Right VanceMack?

Try...TRY to not be an idiot. I've not yet seen you successfully pull that off yet...but I AM an eternal optimist. I have always said...Protest. Protest to your hearts content. Protest LEGALLY and to your hearts content. You dont have the right to block streets, public access ways, disrupt commerce, etc. Follow the laws...follow the rules...follow the constitution. If you are too stupid to handle that basic guidance then for your own sake, stay in your basement where you belong.

It is absolutely illegal without permits. You sound like an unemployed college student that thinks you understand the law and constitution or for that matter the world and in fact havent yet had to work a 40 hour a week job with a paycheck and provide for yourself and still live off of mommy and/or daddy.

Nope...not an internet badass...unless that image makes you feel all better about yourself.

The problem with the current protest site is that it will be too close to the Convention activities that the secret service might require them to be removed entirely from where they are.

And, unfortuntaely, there aren't alot of grassy gnolls for folks to set up camping in downtown Charlotte except where they are (Old City Hall) and the other "Green Spaces" uptown that will also be within the "buffer zone" for the president's safety.

Well, don't act a fool, and I won't have to give you a little bit of "Hickory Jesus"

I think it may be reversed, I'm not sure freedom means what you think it means.

after the fiasco at the Uptown Celebration CMPD wont let those clowns near there and the DNC will make sure of it

I think that it's just sorta excuse to remove protest from where protest NEEDS to be. I'd much rather have protest at the events because that's what the protest is for. Once we remove it to the corner so no one has to deal with it or see it or interact with it, you lose a lot of the power of protest. Rights are not to be subjugated to the nearest corner, I'd rather we uphold them fully. The RNC last time pre-arrested folk they thought would be trouble makers. I'm not sure how that could be legal; but in today's day and age government has taken severely aggressive action towards freedom and liberty.

If you support people doing whatever and wherever and however they want to without regard to the laws of the land, then it is you that has a misguided version of freedom. I think you are thinking more along the lines of 'Anarchy.' History serves as a reminder as to the reason 'why' it has become necessary to create those caged protest zones....primarily because like children, too many of the moronic protesters have proven they arent responsible enough to follow the rules and laws of the land. If they respected the rights of others and the laws they could protest peacefully right there alongside with the 'people' instead of being treated like 'animals'.

Well, the information I stated was from rumors that I've heard.
I can't see how the current protest site is within any buffer zones though.... its not exactly close

Besides, Charlotte's occupiers are quite inconsequential compared to what ive seen from the other cities.....
Hell, half of them go get hotels overnight and leave their tents up to keep up appearances.

If you don't have a permit to march down the public street (thus allowing the city to have enough advanced warning during the permitting process to put into place measures to ensure you won't disrupt the regular movement of people on the streets) then yes, marching down the public street is illegal, because you are impeding the flow of traffic.

So we have to cage people and use government force against their exercise of assembly and protest because people can't be trusted with their rights, huh? Not 100% the strongest argument out there.

And that's fine. I just have problems with caging freedom in the way we do, particularly when it's in reference to political protest. Political protest in particular must be upheld to its fullest, IMO.

If anything, "Free Speech Zones" create paid and permitted protest zones ON THE STREET without anyone having to chip in, and the safety measures to ensure no traffic will be trying to go through there. Thats how I see it.

It just depends on its location.

It is absolutely illegal without permits.
"Amendment I: Congress shall make no law ... abridging ... the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

You sound like an unemployed
