Nope... I worked Thanksgiving... And not a dime in extra pay...

Even got off work an hour late due to catching armed robbery suspects..... And only got Comp time for the hour instead of pay.

other than when I was teaching, I have never been union and (with the exception of military) I have usually been paid double for working holidays and if the holiday happened to fall on a weekend, I got triple.

but, of course, I haven't worked minimum wage, low skill, low education, low training jobs since I was in High School

well, i was asking zyph, but why do you find it necessary to look down your nose at retail workers? everybody can't be like you, oscar. people should be treated with respect, extra pay should be granted for holidays, period. right now, employers hold employees hostage.

oh, I agree. although, most of these kinds of places (I have many redneck relatives who work retail) typically ask for volunteers to work the holiday shifts, the students and the people without families who don't mind working holidays. They usually only "force" people to work if they can't get enough volunteers.

what gets me is that these people were making a big deal out of having to come in to work at midnight after thanksgiving. how was that going to keep them from spending time with their family on thanksgiving any more than coming in a 7-8 the next morning?

This year, we went to Orlando for thanksgiving week. I spent Thanksgiving day at Sea World and then had thanksgiving dinner at the Pirates Adventure Dinner Theater. I stopped at a Chevron station and bought gas. Stopped at wallyworld to pick up snacks for the kids for the drive home. I didn't hear a single employee all day long bitching about having to work on thanksgiving day.

I wasn't referring to an increase in the minimum wage.

In any event, there are plenty of examples of wages increasing without job loss. Otherwise, wages would never increase, would they?

But that's because unions demanded that for workers in similar jobs at other employers. Your employer had to match that standard. Much like unions won things like paid vacation, the 40 hour work week, overtime pay, etc. for all workers.

Of course there are, like when the economy is good and the job markets are tight.

So you were wrong when you said "Businesses always cut back when they are forced to pay low skilled workers more money."?

Sorry, yes my thoughts were not complete. I was thinking about our current situation which is really what is relevant here. But my point was correct. If Target employee's wished to form a union and strike over this for higher wages, some of them are going to be out of a job.
