Mailing Chickenpox Lollipops and Other Infected Items is Illegal

Well... it seems like they have consent, since the parents are seeking out these infected lollipops and having their mailed to their own address. It's just ignorant because the lollipops contain a live virus and it's not comparable to a vaccine.

I don't know why the parents are so afraid of their kids getting chicken pox anyway. It's not that serious of a disease and you're immune for life after you have it.

BLARRRRRP! (sound of siren) WRONG!!!

Shingles
Main article: Herpes zoster
After a chickenpox infection, the virus remains dormant in the body's nerve tissues. The immune system keeps the virus at bay, but later in life, usually as an adult, it can be reactivated and cause a different form of the viral infection called shingles (scientifically known as herpes zoster).[18]

Chickenpox and Shingles

Chickenpox is a common viral infection that can reappear later in life as shingles. A vaccine is recommended for all infants and non immune adults.

What is Shingles?

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox, usually in adulthood and many years after the initial chickenpox illness.
The illness is characterised by a painful chickenpox-like rash on a small area of skin, usually on one side of the body.
Pain and tingling associated with the rash may persist for weeks or months after the rash has cleared. This is called post-herpetic neuralgia.
The virus can be spread by direct contact with the skin rash of infected people. This causes chickenpox in people who are not immune.
Shingles develops more commonly in people who are immunosuppressed.

So, you are not granting your child immunity - rather the opposite - a probability of experiencing a debilitating and painful disease later in life

I got chicken pox when I was 24. Not a pretty sight. Ran a temp of 104.

Calm down.

Most people who have had chicken pox never get shingles in their life. Glad you sounded the alarm bell though... you're being an alarmist.

Glad it is you not me willing to play Russian Roulette

And this is what I meant about spreading misinformation - It was obvious from your previous post you had no idea that Shingles is the adult version of Chicken pox and that one did NOT get a life long immunity from contracting the disease.

And while people tell themselves misinformation i.e. "Why vaccinate we have eliminated the diseases in question" or "Vaccinations cause more harm than good" we will still get Tetanus cases

I already knew what herpes zoster is and that adults get it in the form of shingles, it just doesn't happen that often and it's mostly related to autoimmune disorder which causes the herpes to become active again. And guess what one potential factor is in auto-immune disease? How many vaccines you've had. The research is still preliminary but I find it interesting.

And can we please not turn this into another thread where I get attacked by you and your OCD authoritarian cohorts who think I shouldn't have the right to said no to a medical procedure? I said no already, so back the hell off.

Gosh I hope I never get it. Never had it as a kid, really don't want to get it as an adult.

If you do not want to "get attacked" REFERENCE what you are saying and ensure it is correct - and do not make statements that are incorrect such as "chickenpox gives a lifetime immunity" because I WILL attack statements like that

Just like you have not bothered to reference what you have posted above - and I can bet why - most probably because you have it from one of the anti-vaccine sites

Meantime here is more about Shingles

Complications

Sometimes, the pain in the area where the shingles occurred may last for months or years. This pain is called postherpetic neuralgia. It occurs when the nerves have been damaged after an outbreak of shingles. Pain ranges from mild to very severe pain. It is more likely to occur in people over 60 years.

Other complications may include:

Another attack of shingles

Blindness (if shingles occurs in the eye)

Deafness

Infection, including encephalitis or sepsis (blood infection) in persons with weakened immune systems

Bacterial skin infections

Ramsay Hunt syndrome if shingles affected the nerves in the face

I have never seen a more perfect example of how modern civilization is interfering in the process of natural selection. Because this collection of gullible, sap-witted mental defectives believes that vaccines are "too dangerous" they are instead opting to deliberately infect their children with live strains of the diseases that they have purchased from strangers online for more money than the "greedy pharmacorps" are charging.

I, for one, cannot ****ing wait until we have a vaccine for the HIV virus.

Its one thing when a child gets chicken pox on their own and its another when a parent deliberate gives their children chicken pox. **** like these lollipops should be illegal.

My aunt had shingles after age 40, and she contracted chicken pox as an adult. Earlier I was talking about children having it. But thanks for the lecture nonetheless. No thread referencing vaccinations is complete without you yelling at me.

So the anti-vaxer parents believe live VZV is safer than dead VZV.

You know, I understand that some people haven't taken immunology, but when kids suffer because of a parent's willful ignorance, it just pisses me off.

Picks up jaw from floor and closes mouth

WHAAAAAT?????

And of course the idiot twonks will be bringing their infected children into the EDs and hospitals to put at risk all the immune deficient people there

Sorry but this is where the "right to free speech" that the anti-science crowd are exploiting, often for their own gain, should be mitigated by an international law on "false advertising"

Parents deliberately exposing their children to chicken pox and measles has been going on for a loooong time...mostly, I'm sure, before there were vaccinations for the disease. Getting either one as an adult is much more severe than getting them as children.

I can understand why some parents are hesitant to give their children these vaccines since there is some slight evidence that connects the vaccines with autism. The CDC says that one in 110 children has autism. WTF? Why? CDC - Features - How Many Children have Autism - NCBDDD

The professionals "for" vaccines tell us that this high diagnosis rate is because of better detection. But higher risk from these vaccines cannot be ruled out. What's a parent to do? It's a bit scarey.

Personally, I think autism has become fashionable. It's over-diagnosed by a system that is $$-incentivized to have more and more students needing special services. Not too much different from the bi-polar craze.

Yes - it is a bit scary . . . but the prospect of side effects became less scary for me than the prospect of my children dying of one of those diseases - in my state we've had recent outbreaks of Measles and Whooping Cough . . . among other things.

Per the tainted lollies: I never understood the thought process of parents who intentionally infect tehir children with anything. When I was a kid pox-parties were big. thankfully my parents were respectful enough of me to not send me off to one in the hopes I'd come down with it.

Who does that? Like - ever? What type of person WANTS their child to contract an illness, condition or disease? A little twisted. It goes against parenting - I think. I protect my children FROM conditions - I don't want them to CONTRACT conditions.

i didn't get it as a kid, either.

at 19, i caught it after being in the same car with a child who had it. the year before the vaccine came out. it sucked.

get the vaccine. you don't want this stuff as an adult. acyclovir pills helped a little, but not much.

the "connection" was a hoax invented by andrew wakefield. it has been refuted over and over again, and his publications have been thrown out.

vaccines aren't causing autism. but preventable diseases are causing deaths. it's not a scary choice, it's a simple one.

From the CDC link I posted:

No single factor explains the changes in identified ASD prevalence over the time period studied. Although some of the increases are due to better detection, a true increase in risk cannot be ruled out.

Where has the CDC stated that vaccinations have been ruled out? They don't. They just keep repeating that they're safe. Yet they also say this:

At present, we do not know definitively if vaccines can trigger neurological or developmental declines among children with mitochondrial disorders. We do know, however, that infections can cause neurological and developmental declines among these children—and we also know that childhood vaccinations protect children against some of the same infections known to cause developmental decline among children with mitochondrial disorders. These include vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, chickenpox and influenza.

In the case of children with mitochondrial disorders, we do not yet have sufficient evidence to make general immunization recommendations. Physicians who care for children with these disorders usually recommend that these children receive their childhood vaccines, but depending on the child's health status or medical condition, they may change when those vaccinations are provided.

Children are not checked for mitochondrial disorders before they are vaccinated; yet many have suggested all children be tested for these disorders before being vaccinated. What the CDC says, basically, is that the possible elevated risk is worth the benefit. This is some small consolation to the parents of the 2,100 children who received payouts under the Vaccine Injury Program.

Reminds me of a dog my mom had. She was itchy-itchy-itchy. The vet gave her a steroid shot. She died. The vet said that she was found to be pre-diabetic after the shot was given. Had they known that, she'd have never gotten the steroids.

Autism was never my forefront concern - even when my oldest was diagnosed with it.

The unknown is my concern. I've always been well aware of the many medications and bits of advise that doctors over all the centuries have given - that have turned out flat out wrong leading to extreme problems such as deformities in unborn children and extreme complications and side effects.

Complications due to vaccinations - in a variety of forms - do happen. So much so that there's a national vaccine injury compensation trust fund which compensates in the event of such 'side effects'

The focus on Autism is out of proportion: for all the documented and compensated conditions that are related to vaccinations - few are autism. Statistics Reports However. Take into account the stringent list of qualifying conditions and their narrow time-frame. I imagine it's hard to determine, scientifically - and it's likely that autism is only one such potential latent condition.

All in all: the percentile of cases-to-injections is low. A lot of children and adults are vaccinated - a small percentage overall have complications . . . but the payouts in compensations is quite high (in the millions each year)

They aren't "safe" - but it's a matter of weighing our risk: risk of contracting THAT disease - VS the lower risk of developing reactions to the vaccine.

I know some parents weigh out the risk and avoid certain vaccinations due to the high-risk rate associated with it and they consider that the risk of contracting said disease is low.

i apologize if i come off as testy on the vaccination subject. after reviewing my own posts on this subject, i realize that my tone has been highly confrontational. it's just after suffering through post grad immunology, anti-vax woo is like nails on a chalk board. not to mention that i had serious lung surgery as a kid which left me very vulnerable to respiratory infections throughout childhood. had my parents been anti-vax nutters, i would certainly be dead right now.

the adverse immunological reactions to vaccines that occur in the vast minority of patients are also caused by the real infection. and if one is not allergic to eggs, the benefits to getting the vaccine instead of the disease are great.

the basic fact of the matter is that a lot of parents who have believed the hyperbolic woo of natural blogs have put their child's health in the hands of herd immunity, and kids have died because of it. more will die in the future, and it's completely preventable. some of those kids will be like me. the fact that they might get horribly sick or die simply because they didn't win the parental lottery really bothers me.

it's "natural," though, to die during childhood or by age 40. it's so natural that humans become reproductively viable by age 13 at the latest. personally, i'd rather see as many preventable diseases eradicated as possible.

Because if your family has an extreme susceptibility to it, like mine, you do everything you can to avoid it. Two of my kids, like me and my mother before me, suffered greatly. I've posted this before. Head-to-toe blisters, scalp, under eyelids, ears, mouth, between fingers and toes. My third child was born as the varicella vaccine became available, thus sparing her the misery and pain of going through it and me the heart break of trying to alleviate it.

I would have preferred us all to get our immunity from a shot rather than go through 10 days of intense itching and recovery. There is no reason to go through that and risk your child's health.

I was a cop along time...the depth of stupidity that people can muster doesnt surprise me....vaccines work...period

This is no different than the stupidity of some religions that want to deny children medical care for religious beliefs...thankfully the courts have stepped in and forced medical care for the children

The risks of vaccine complications aren't even in the same universe as the risks of the illnesses they prevent. You know those people who claim they don't wear seatbelts because it's safer to be thrown from the car sometimes? Think like that, except on an airliner. Someone deciding that sometimes it's better to be thrown from your seat in a plane crash so they don't wear a seatbelt on the airline flight.

That's pretty much the level of stupid we're talking about.

In rare cases you CAN get chicken pox a second time. And, having chicken pox leaves you susceptible to getting shingles in the future, a disease that is very painful and potentially quite scarring.

I had it when I was 30. Missed 3 weeks of work, had a pretty high temp. Most ill I've ever been.

Maggie... from what I recall the vaccine-autism connection was completely refuted a while back. The author of the paper that "proved" it, falsified all of the evidence.
