How much did you get paid while you were in?
Don't remember but E-4 pay is available online.
How many times did you recieve your benefit sheet indicating how much your 'socialized' medicine was actually worth as a benefit?
I think it was invaluable. Being able to go to the doctor at any time, and pay nothing at all was the greatest feeling in the world. I had to see specialists after coming back from my deployment and I never had to worry about costs. The peace of mind was invaluable.

Fast forward to right after I get out in college and get a migraine and get a doctor bill of like 500 bucks for seeing a doctor and just getting a shot. Not to mention 90 bucks per migraine pill.
In any other job you would be compensated at a much higher rate.
Of course, so people have proven time and time again things like free medical care is worth lower pay....or in another way of looking at it higher taxes.

Not really - it's all prt of the miltiary pay; and therresult is that your acutal base pay is much smaller. so, for esxample, as a Sgt, I get about 2400 a month bas bpay. in the civiliaian world, with my jobs, I would get aboubt 7K+ a montha in pay.... tand that's AFTER taxes.

I'm happy to hear of your responsible fiscal behavior. My ducks are in a row and I shall retire in 6 short years :-). I'm so short I need a step ladder to get into my boots (Nam era draftee saying for those in their 13th month).

You, on the other hand, will retire from the Marine Corp sometime smack dab in the middle of your working years. At that time you will have to go out and apply for work for the first time in your life. I expect you will do well.

I tend to agree. Our financial crisis occurred because investment banks lobbied our congressmen to relax banking regulations, allowing them to wreak economic havoc. They've used their political influence to go unpunished and to halt attempts at reining in their mischief. Many people are suffering hardships because of wall street economic crimes. It just seems to me to be completely unamerican to decide to take it on the chin, work twice as hard and not raise hell about an obvious injustice that has caused so much misery. This is not what Americans have done in the past. Sure, personal responsibility and hard work are as American as apple pie but this is not an issue about a group of people who are too lazy to work hard for the American dream. They're mad because the American dream is being dismantled.

nah...they should pay soldiers commensurate to union workers salary. How much an hour would you take for spending 7 of 20 years of your career separated from your family, working overtime and weekends whenever told you have to, being shot at, having bombs dropped on your head, etc? Lets see...we know what they are paying the Blackwater types...so...if you are suggesting that military folks should be paid comparable to civilian sector...I highly doubt you are going to get any complaints from the military. Of course...its going to cost a hell of a lot more since now the soldiers cant be forced to live in barracks, cant be forced on meal cards, will have to pay overtime...etc.

Mil pay has always been a give and take scenario. Military personnel accept the lower pay and the working conditions (USUALLY without whining about how unfair life is when they actually get deployed and sent to do the job they volunteered to do) with the understanding and agreement that long term there will be a return...provided that they survive and provided they stay in.
