The Nobel Peace Prize nominees for 2011 recognize a number of activists, among themJulian Assange, Bradley Manning, Wael Ghonim, Tunisian blogger Lina Ben Mhenni, and Egyptian Israa Abdel Fattah together with the April 6 Youth Movement.

Thus the Arab Spring, as it has been termed, is well-represented in the Nobel Peace Prize nominees this year, and with good reason: It was a remarkable grassroots revolution that is still changing the North African and Middle East dynamic and, indeed, the world.
Much of this, however, might not have been possible but for the actions of Bradley Manning and Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks.
Manning allegedly leaked diplomatic cables and video (of a 2007 Apache helicopter attack) to WikiLeaks. Manning had access to SIPRNet and the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System from his workstation in Iraq. His reason for leaking the documents? Manning wrote to former hacker Adrian Lamo, “I want people to see the truth… regardless of who they are … because without information, you cannot make informed decisions as a public.”
Assange, as founder and public face of WikiLeaks, took these documents—in addition to other diplomatic cables and documents—and published them on WikiLeaks—an act the oldNew York Times would have done without hesitation in the Pentagon Papers-era, but seems quite reluctant to do in the 21st century.

If it had not been for WikiLeaks publishing the leaked diplomatic cables, the Arab Spring might not have been possible. The leaks were the catalyst, as Amnesty International stated, supplying the momentum in Tunisia and Egypt, for example. Even Retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel Ann Wright, in a recent Stars & Stripes editorial, has called Wikileaks “a critically important tool for those who seek to uphold basic human-rights standards and the professional conduct of U.S. military forces.”

Full article found here: Bradley Manning and Julian Assange Both Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize | Death and Taxesf i could vote on this i would defiantly vote for one of these two or some of the leaders of the Arab Spring. I believe this will defiantly have a positive impact on the movements behind Manning and Asange. I believe they defiantly need to be set free. I applaud them and them being on the award list!

I think Assange is scum that cared for nothing but his own ego and standing. That said, I'm more questioning concerning any actual illegality on his part.

I think Manning should be locked away for treason as its clear and unquestionable his actions were.

Manning should be shot as a traitor.

So a man that hosts a website that reveals governments and makes more governments open is a "scum"... Ok.

I think Manning should be locked away for treason as its clear and unquestionable his actions were.

And a man that releases a video that shows an Apache helicopter murdering innocents and releases other information that makes our military and government more open is a "traitor"...

For some reason i dont understand how these 2 men are "bad"... They released valuable information that should be open to the public because the public needs to know everything that goes on in their country for a democracy to work...

I am a fan of Wikileaks as an entity, but I do not much care for Julian Assange. Manning... I just feel bad for him. I do not think he is very bright.

I've always had mixed feelings about Wikileaks, but lately I've been thinking: Wikileaks claims to hold the federal government accountable, but who the hell holds them accountable when the release information to the public that is SUPPOSED TO BE classified? Like it or not, state secrets are necessary sometimes.

Also, apart from that, the government and military need to seriously up their security game. Someone has to find out who the **** is leaking them all this information.

I have little sympathy for Manning. I don't think he is stupid (stupid people can't hack that well and uncover that much information), but he knew what he was getting into. When you enlist, you sign a contract and the military/government owns you. You do the crime, you do the time. If you believe that strongly in what you're doing that you're willing to do the crime anyway, then you should be prepared the face the consequences.

In my opinion, they are both heroes. I don't believe gov't secrecy should be tolerated. In Manning's case, an obvious "murder for sport" was revealed. The info was classified. Sounds more like hidden and covered up like a cat dropping and then someone uncovered it. Same smell. Assange has to be the contemporary hero of "freedom of the press," and they could use him right now on that Wall Street occupation. The truths about our gov't are iconoclastic facts and the behaviour of the gov't is what must be changed.

The entire idea that the government should not be held accountable for its actions is disgusting, which is exactly what classification is all about. Further, classification is used nowadays to hide information from the public, even when its exposing is not threatening to national security. I believe Panetta even commented as such in an interview with NPR.

It's depressing to admit it, but the Nobel Peace Prize is little more than a joke anymore.

Some things need to be kept secret. Broadcasting an impending security move, international arrest, etc. prior to the event would be disasterous. Broadcasting intelligence which would threaten the safety of an ally would be disasterous. Transparency shouldn't go so far that it puts people in danger. There are sick, hateful, hurtful people and groups out there. Secrecy is sometimes needed.

Manning's actions were legally defined treason. He deserves the legally defined penalty for those actions.

Assange is a coward, IMO. He and his supporters commit illegal actions for the sake of some ambiguous goal and receive praise from the jaded, cynical masses. I'm not impressed.

As for Nobel Price nominations? I gave up on them after Al Gore won.

Manning didn't access that information all by himself. I think they should hold his nuts to the fire and see how many of his accomplices he gives up.

I have no respect for the Nobel Peace prize anymore.... so they can give it to whomever they feel like and I won't care...

Why? Because Obama got it? Let's call a spade a spade. Just say it.

nice race baiting.... hopefully such tactics work for you in the future.

I lost respect for the prize long before Obama came around to win it.

Obama is just the last undeserving soul to win, certainly not the first.

Why? Because Obama got it? Let's call a spade a spade. Just say it.

The Nobel was a prize long before Obama got it. Hell! Yasser Arafat for the friggin' thing! It became a supreme joke when Le Duc Tho won it back in '73.

So, no, it doesn't have anything to do with Obama.

Again, why? And when did I bring up race? Did you just race bait yourself? Wow.

Who would you have given it to instead that year?

C'mon, you just like the holding of the nuts part.

While I don't buy into the whole "Wikileaks and Manning are villians" thing, I don't think either has earned any sort of "Peace Prize". If there was a "Transparency Prize", they could win that, but they haven't really helped the world become more peaceful.

I think he leaked a video that shows US troops firing on people that pose no immenent threat. He exposed a warcrime and all who locked him away need to in turn, be locked away.

People who reveal valuable information to boost their own standing and reputation to endanger many people's lives are nothing but scum

Yes, I'm sure all government secrets should be revealed to the public. The rosters of officers, missile installations, troop movements, everything

You are killing me Smalls. :lamo

BO won the Noble Peace Prize and promptly came back to DC and started two more wars and targeted assassinations around the globe.

I have a recommendation....maybe the Noble committee should give a humanitarian award to the Libyan rebels that are running around raping women and shooting every black man they find.

How is it a war crime? You can prove a criminal intent to murder non-combatants, in cold blood, just for the hell-of-it? Or, is the reality that there's no way that you, nor anyone else can say with any amount of certainty what the prespective was of the soldiers doing the shooting and that it was just another unfortunate incident that happens in war?

It's really ****ed up, that American servicemen have to worry more about being fingered for a war crime, than being killed by the enemy.
