Yep. I don't blame the NYT for hiring him. He is one of the few people I actually read.

Oh, I understand that, and it is news, and it is interesting. I am anxiously awaiting the next couple polls, to see if they show a similar spike, and wonder why he of all the candidates spiked.

I am doing this on my phone, so my response is going to be somewhat limited. First off, I think you are correct in that running a business isn't the same as holding the office of President. You may have qualified business experience, but the business world and political world really aren't the same beast. And this holds even more true on the national level, where you are much more likely to see divides along partisan lines then you would at the state or local level.

But I think what people like about Cain is the fact he didn't hold a political spot, which isn't really true. And this somehow makes him appealing because many people hate the system. What they don't realize is that Cain really wont change anything, but there is that hope he will. That and the fact people like cheering for the underdog.

And then there is something to say about the system itself. People in the beginning support who they like the most, but then will vote for some one who has a better shot. It is weird.

What it looks like to me is that Perry and Bachmann have dropped and their support went to Cain. This actually makes sense, since Cain is, among the remaining candidates, the one most like Perry and Bachmann. Paul is of course holding dead steady, which is to be expected, since Paul has a fervent base and the rest of the world thinks he is bat**** insane. He will get his ~10 % consistently, without it going up or down much. The rest don't have enough support to matter much except Romney, and I am not sure who Romney supporters would switch to.

Nobody is counting chickens. What we are doing is the time honored tradition of over-analyzing poll numbers during an election. It is interesting to some of us, and fun!

I like him because he isn't Romney or Perry.

I've caught him several times on the radio over the past few years and have always found him warm, genuine, and sensible. And I laugh every time I hear that audio clip when he says he thinks folks are "over this first African-American President thing" and hope it's true because some people never cared. They didn't vote for Obama because they didn't agree with his views, but if they like Cain's views, they will vote for him. It's fashionable in some progressive circles to play the race-card, but I don't think people much care about it.
