Or for that matter do you realize how rich most of members of Congress are. The top 50 wealthiest members range from Texas Rep.Michael McCaul at $287 million to a paltry sum of $5.34 Million reported by Oregon senator Ron Wyden. How could they possibly understand what the majority of the American people have to deal with as far as their struggles just to pay bills and feed their family.

some Like Speaker Boehner grew up rather poor and made his millions on his own. Some Like Steve Chabot didn't get rich off of public office and lives in the same home he had 25 years ago driving a 15 year old car. others got rich off of public office (Obama and clinton are prime examples) and others came from wealth, Many married into it-Kerry, Pelosi, Boxer and Feinswein

There is no payment for the rights of citizenship. The US Constitution makes that very clear.

How did Clinton & Obama get rich in public office? Both made salaries which according to you are modest. Clinton made all his money as a private citizen after his term ended. Obama is not a wealthy man.

HOw did Michelle Obumble get a huge salary after her husband won a senate seat? do you think Obumbles book would have sold as much if he had not been elected president?

How did AL Gore Sr-the poor country school teacher become a mllionaire after being taken in by Armand Hammer. Do you think his senate seat had something to do with that

Obama is not a wealthy man? than why does that clown claim people like him need to pay more taxes?

So that clown is a liar as well as an incompetent president?

So to apply this standard of yours - that anyone serving in any public office is somehow rich from that office regardless of where the actual income came from, at what point in time it came from, or where it came from, who that ever served in any office is exempt from that line of thinking?

A book published by a publisher in a private business is not money from the government or from people in their role as taxpayers.

By the very standard that you keep advocating on this very board, Obama is not a wealthy man with his income for such a brief period of time. He makes 400K per year from government service and has done so for three years. Before that he was earning in the area of 150K a year for government service for a similarly brief period of years.

By the standards you keep advocating here Turtle, he is merely upper middle class.

Wrong in your opinion but not wrong by the opinion of the US Constitution and the people who wrote it. You of course have a perfect right to your opinion. You have a perfect right to reject the principles and language of the US Constitution. You have a perfect right to reject equal voting rights for all US Citizens. As an American, that same US Constitution protects those opinions.

Fortunately, that same US Constitution makes it very clear that your ideas about paying for citizenship and who can vote and for who and what are foreign to it.

And therein lies the beauty of our nation and of our government. The same document which you seem to hold in disdain because it does not share your vision of who can vote protects your opinion to hold that opinion.

The 400 highest-earning U.S. households reported an average of $345 million in income in 2007, up 31% from a year earlier, IRS statistics show.

The average tax rate for the households fell to the Lowest in almost 20 years.

The figures for 2007, the last year of an economic expansion, show that the average income reported by the top 400 earners more than doubled from $131.1 million in 2001. That year, Congress adopted tax cuts urged by then-President George W. Bush that Democrats say disproportionately benefit the wealthy.

Each household in the top 400 of earners paid an average tax rate of 16.6%, the Lowest since the agency began tracking the data in 1992, the Internal Revenue Service statistics show. The top 400 paid $23 billion in taxes in 2007, up from $18 billion a year earlier, and a bigger amount than any year since 1992.

Their average effective tax rate was about Half the 29.4% in 1993, the first year of President Bill Clinton’s administration, when taxes were increased. The top 400 earners reported an average of $46 million of income that year.

The statistics underscore “two long-term trends: that income at the very top has Exploded and their taxes have been Cut dramatically,” said Chuck Marr, director of federal tax policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington-based research group that supports increasing taxes on high-income individuals....

Obama became a multi-millionaire off of his books, I think you know that. Yes Clinton got rich after leaving office, but how did he do it? Did he create a new widget or form a business that took off, or did pals pay him $250K to give a speech for an hour. Talk about crony capitalism.

You will just never get it will ya....or you do and you just blow it off.....400 americans make more and have more than the entire bottom 50% ....400 have more than almost 200,000,000 thats why they pay more taxs....because they SUCK half of the wealth of the entire country out of it

Why isn't my generation paying to this! I've been saying this for years. No wonder why most college educated 20 year old's can't find jobs! The rich are milking the whole country at our and others expense. Also to add to the fact that even if you do get that dream job, they will poorly train you (if you are trained), and will pay you less than you are worth!

Yes. This infrastructure is something necessary to maintain our society for it to continue to function, even if people deem it socialist or theft. However, in the case of investments and industry leaders, there is a multiplier, because each of the people who work to create the wealth for the top people also use this infrastructure, meaning that a single person can benefit from the same bridge many times over while an hourly or salary person, sees less of a multiplier.

One truism that people often forget is that we all stand on the shoulders and build off the successes of others. No man "did it" on their own, even though individual action is a necessary component of success, it is one component among others and it does not good and is not logical to focus in on one aspect of success can claim it is the only reason it happened.

This is why the conservative point that the rich are contributing [whatever percent it is] of federal revenue is meaningless.
